Find Albuterol Inhaler Chemical Make Up in Questions
Does freezing a prescription pill or other drug likely make it ineffective? I left several prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines (ibuprofen, nyquil, albuterol inhaler) in a car for several days in single digit (8 F) cold-as-butt north dakota temeratures. Most things say "Store between 15-30 C or 59-86 F", but does it really do anything to freeze this stuff? Or are these just idle threats from the manufactures to cover their asses? Or could are the chemical compositions of these drugs likely to change? Thanks!

Yaybob replied: "I'm a physician. This subject has not come up for me before, and I could find no specific answer. But here's what I know about the physics, chemistry and pharmacology of pharmaceuticals and cold temperatures: They should be fine. Molecules survive rides on comets through near absolute zero temperatures and appear intact in meteorites. Also, amino acids have been found in large interstellar gas clouds in deep space. Very large molecules like DNA might not fare so well, although that's debatable, and irrelevant to the present question. It's heat plus time that is so damaging to chemicals. In the cold, chemistry slows or stops and chemicals break down less quickly. Fortunately, ibuprofen and Nyquil are inexpensive and easily replaced, so, even though they are likely to be good, you might replace them anyway. Test the albuterol inhaler to make sure that it still delivers the spray that you are used to, and that it helps wheezing as always. And I would keep any other prescription drugs that you might not have named if they are pricey since the risk is low that they have lost efficacy (effectiveness), and virtually zero that they have converted into something actually harmful."

jamus d woespuss replied: "the chemistry would not have changed however there is a tiny possibility that the inhaler contents could have become unhomogenized (unmixed) as long as u shake the container IMMEDIATELY before use, it will be ok"

iheart808 replied: "Not for small molecules, could denature some protein drugs in solution like insulin, but is unlikely to be worse than leaving them at room temperature. Coldness can condence (or sublime) water, so keeping open packets of drugs which are suseptable to hydrolysis may be a problem if you don't use them as soon as you take them out."

plenum222 replied: "I doubt those would be damaged. I think the main concern of the pharmaceuticals is to limit the damage that frozen water-ice crystals may cause to the individual molecules of the medications, but if they were in relatively air-tight containers they should be okay. Maintaining the temperature relatively constant would reduce the chance of some cooler-prefering bacteria or mold growing on the tablets which sometimes contains sugar, I think. The inhaler, I wouldn't know, except to say that as a child I frequently used inhalers on winter campouts in Massachusetts where our butts froze, too!"

Proventil HFA- How is the CFC inhaler bad for the environment, it goes into your lungs, not the air??? Ok- the wonderful drug association is going to get rid of the Albuterol CFC Inhalers and replace them with a more expensive version that is supposedly safer for the environment. How are the CFC inhalers bad for the environment? The chemical spray goes in your mouth and personally I don't have a hole in the back of my head for the gas to escape from- So how does the current gen inhaler effect the ozone layer? P.S- I invest in sunscreen.

eaglesfly47 replied: "WARNING: "Politically Incorrect/aka Censorship" answer. I had an Inhaler prescribed to me. also. I figured if it's "bad for the environment" then it can't be good for me either, and quit using it. Amazingly, I don't need an inhaler anymore. I also has the same questions as you do and starting doing some research. Here is what I found out: You are being conditioned and brainwashed about Inhalers so-called harmful effects on the environment. It's an environmental "global warming" falsehood perpetrated by governments and faulty science. It's based on money for the Pharmacy Industries and for Control Mechanisms etc. The public's bought into this global warming hysteria, rather then proven scientific facts. This Matra is being used to enslave the people of the World. It will make the West into a Third World Nation status by imposing impossible "rules" to follow. Follow the Rules or face Prison. In addition, a Carbon Tax is being imposed that will financially break this Nation. Question: How can a "carbon tax" solve gobal warming? It can't. It's just a lame excuse for a World Government total control grid. This Mantra has actually become a RELIGION that you "better not refute." People who don't buy the environmental gobal warning Mantra are being accused of being "terrorists", Nazis, Nuts, ad nauseaum. If having a differing viewpoint is "terrormism" then we are truly living under tyranny. If so, WHO are the true Nazis and Terrorists? See documentary on You Tube exposing this hoax. Type "totaldrivel" into their search engine and watch "The Great Warming Swindle (Complete). Based on proven science. If you want to know what could be used to truly change the environment type : "Tesla and HAARP" into your search engine and see how this amazing technology can be presently used to effect the ozone and how this marvelous, potentially good and useful technology is being used for evil intentions. Good luck."

Cassandra Deschain replied: "The issue must be that the gas that escapes from the inhaler leaves through your ears and does more damage than an automobile. It must be considering they took the time to research how a splinter of plastic saving peoples lives is killing the planet while 18 wheelers belch smoke when they're not running people off the interstate. I'm not against either killing the planet or 18 wheelers, I'm actually in favor of both. I wish I could write this answer on a styrofoam cup so people a hundred years from now could see that I don't give a shit about this planet. I'm out, I need to jump in my truck, burn some fossil fuels, and hunt me some endangered species. Polar bear jerky is tasty..."

Albuterol inhalers made by Armstrong Pharmaceuticals, Inc...Where do i look for present day inhalers ? At present my primary Doctor has me on a breathing Inhaler=Albuterol 90MCG 200D oral INHL. Made by Armstrong. But i was told by the local drug store that this type inhaler would be discontinued & replaced with a different Aerosol mixture on or before Jan 1st 2009. I do know that all the present day Albuterol type inhalers are being phased out. With the reason being for the enviorment & ozone layer ? These new Albuterol type inhalers are being made with a different chemical make up by all the pharmaceutical company state side, if not world wide ? Over the years past & present, i have found out that the new version inhalers do not work near as well or act as fast with the needed quick relief as the ones that they were replaced with. So, my question is where if possible would i be able to obtain the older inhalers ? Would Canada still have the older version inhalers prescription wise ? Or who if any other ? Note; i suffer from asbestos with my breathing. Thank You.

blondeqt124 replied: "After albuterol is taken off the market, you shouldn't be able to get it from anywhere and if you could, it would be really really hard to do. There are a various number of short acting respiratory medications but the new formulation of albuterol should not have a significant difference in the way it works for you- and if it does, your doctor should be able to prescribe other things for you."
