What does it mean to have Osteoarthritis AND scoliosis? I'm 26 and I just found out that I have Osteoarthritis and Scoliosis in my lower back. What exactly does this mean for me? My doctor was kind of vague with me with this diagnosis. I have a LOT of lower back pain and it hurts all the time and I don't know what to do. My doctor recommended physical therapy, but my work's health insurance doesn't cover it. I have tried Aleve, but it doesn't phase it.

familyguy replied: "hmmm..scoliosis does cause early degeneration of the spine (that's osteoarthritis)... Or degenerative spine could tilt and case mild to moderate scoliosis as well. Since you are young I'd tend to lean towards arthritis being secondary to scoliosis. Rehab could help in some instances..but you need to find someone who really knows what they are doing..especially one's who have dealt with scoliosis.. Another option is soft braces like spinecor. It was originally designed as corrective device...but can be used in adults for symptomatic relief. Check it out at"

Dan replied: "Osteoarthritis basically means that you have some degenerative changes of the joints in your spine. This is a normal part of aging but if the doctor is pointing it out it may be advanced for your age. Scoliosis means a curvature of the spine. Just because you have a curvature does not necessarily mean that you need to get treated. However, considering the fact that you are having symptoms, you should. I would take the referral from the physician to a physical therapist at least for a consultation/examination. The will perform a thorough exam and give their findings and educate you on what is going on. They can also possibly give you some exercises and other treatments that you can do on your own. Since your health insurance does not have physical therapy benefits you can self pay and go intermittently (instead of 2-3x/wk may 1x every 2-3 wks). Just remember you will not see progress as quickly with the lower frequency. You must be very committed to complying with the instructions and recommendations of the PT."

I'm in my 50s and work out every day. I have to take an Aleve every morning to relieve arthritis pain. OK? Aleve seems to be the only thing that relieves osteoarthritis pain from running. Glucosamine doesn't work. But is it OK to take an Aleve every day or does it have harmful effects over time?

Just Me replied: "I'm not sure. I'm in my thirties and I've had arthritis since I was a child. You could supplement with vitamin B-6 and B-12 for a while and see if that helps. In my opinion, it would be best to see a doctor. Hope I helped! : )"

Anyone with Osteoarthritis who can offer suggestions on how to cope with the pain and swelling of the knees? especially while I'm at work. My doc told me to take "Aleve" but it states on the label to take only for 10 days. I also take "Osteo Bi-Flex"--is there anything else that will help-I'm on my feet most of the time. What about the elastic knee supports-any good? Any help would be appreciated....thanks!

Ryan replied: "i have a family member with the same problem. she uses knee braces on both of her knees to give them support and to keep them from straining too hard. it takes awhile to get used to them but she swears by them. As for aleve, that works sometimes for some people. try Motrin or Ibuprofen. She takes 400mgs of Motrin every morning and swears that it helps. Hope you can get it under control :) Good Luck"

Does anyone out there have osteoarthritis in their knees or ankles? I'm having a hard time with my ankles more than my knees. They don't bother me unless I'm on my feet too long, then I can hardly stand; and the pain is pretty bad. What are you doing for yourself? I was taking Celebrex, but stopped because it got too expensive; now I'm taking Aleve but I think my body has become immune too it. I can't afford to go to a doctor and I have no health insurance. Any suggestions?

Dixie replied: "Try to stay off your feet! Fluid can build up around your joints and cause pressure! It is painful! Just elevate your feet and relax! If it occours Try to get in contact with an 24hour nurse! And ask questions, Other than that Please try to go to the physician!"

chitchat1012003 replied: "I have used cold before to aleve the pain. I take a frozen package of peas or mixed vegetables out of the freezer and place on the affected area. It helps because the vegetables are able to form around the area. The cold seems to work wonders. Good luck, this sort of pain is miserable, I know..."

EMTorNot2EMT replied: "My 5 yo has it and it can be very painful for her She takes motrin and tylenol the pain She also likes to soak in a warm bath or just put moist warm towels on her knees and when they are really bad she does that warm bath then puts ice on her knees...it seems to work for her and the dr wants to to keep her off any meds besides the motrin and tylenol as long as possible"

frenchy replied: "I have arthritis in my knees really bad. Just had arthroscopy knee surgery . When my knees get stiff and achy I take ibuprofen. It is a pain reliever and an anti-inflamatory. You can take up to 800mg three times a day. That is what my dr. told me. Works best for me."

nursienurse replied: "Try strengthening exercises. If you are overweight, lose weight. You can try acetaminophen (Tylenol) as well as Aleve. Be active but take frequent rest periods. Elevate your feet. Use ice or heat or both alternately. Look up arthritis on line for more info."
