How long does amoxicillin rash last? I took it a few days ago and yesterday I broke out in a red, blotchy rash that covers my entire body, including my face. I look ridiculous and I can't stay off college for a long time, but I don't want to go in and be laughed at either. Also, I have a party next thursday! It's getting itchy and is very noticeable. So does anyone know how long it will be before it goes away or should I go to a doctor?

davymac7 replied: "I have never heard of Amoxicillin causing a rash, but if you consult the leaflet which accompanies the medication to see if it says that a rash may be a side-effect. If it does, follow the instructions on the leaflet, as it may state 'to cease taking them immediately'. If it hasn't cleared tomorrow, I would be contacting the GP, by phone, if necessary, to obtain advice and/or alternative medication. If you cannot contact your GP or obtain an appointment, then see a pharmacist and they will advise also."

PENNYLANE replied: "You should not get a rash from ANY medication. Look up Stevens-Johnson Syndrome on the Internet. It is a deadly drug reaction that starts with a rash and itching. My Mother died from it. Rash develops into itching and blisters. This is not a joke, look it up! Most drugs come with warnings and it is mentioned on almost all drugs, even over the counter. Don't take any chances and go to the emergency room. It only took one week to kill my mother. Hope you will be O.K., dear."

13 Month old has a bad red rash after 7th day of amoxicillin. Has anyone has anything similar happen? He was treated with the amoxicillin for a double ear infection. About the 7th day he started a rash that has since spread to all areas of his body. He is in a fairly good mood. Sleeping well, eating and pooping. No fever. I have heard that amoxicillin can do this to some people. I am sure it is not scarlet fever. I have looked up those symptoms and they are nothing of what he has. Please let me know what you think. Thanks. He isn't on the drug any longer. It's been 2 days since we've stopped and it seems like it is still spreading. Argh. Heading to the clinic, as soon as it opens that is. Had the test done on Sunday to see if for sure it was a reaction to the amox. We won't know the results for a couple days tho. Thanks for all your answers. Rash is still there, but seems to be fading. Not as red and baby is feeling better.

silverearth1 replied: "he could be alergic to amoxicillin. get to the doctor!"

dancer15252 replied: "I got that rash when taking amoxicillin and I talked to the doctor and it turned out to be and allergic reaction."

mymxboys replied: "Some children get a rash after a virus or illness. My oldest does and it used to scare me to death cause I didn't know what it was. He actually had one this week after getting over whatever is going around now... lol Don't give your baby a very warm bath because that irritates the rash. Call your physician if you are worried about it. Good luck."

K V replied: "Call the doctor now, you're baby may be having an allergic reaction to the amoxicillin and if so shouldn't be taking it anymore."

Darcy34 replied: "You need to check with his doctor before giving any more of the medication. If it is caused from an allergic reaction, it could be dangerous to continue it. I have 2 boys that developed rashes while they were on a penicillen...and they aren't prescribed that anymore. Call your doc and ask what he thinks. He'll probably tell you to hold off on the meds and bring your little guy in tomorrow to be checked. Good luck!"

chonnie2383 replied: "Oh yes my daughter did when she was 9 months, and it scared the hell out of me. She was not given amoxicillian, augmenten, another form of antibiotic. The doctor said she was allergic to it. So whenever she is prescribed antibiotic I just tell the doc no augmentin. Hope he feels better. Oh if it was scarlet fever you would know, your child would be in the hospital"

Lee FunGrandma replied: "Take the baby to the Dr. PLEASE! Usually if they are having an allergic reaction they will have problems breathing. But, scarlet fever is not always detectable. And some allergic reactions does not show up like some do. Please, take the baby to the hospital, or your DR ASAP.........."

zuckie44 replied: "When I was 8 years old, I took penicillin for an ear infection and would up with a red rash. The doctor said it was an allergic reaction to the antibiotic. It sounds like that's what your son has, although it's best to bring him to the doctor so he can see the rash and note it in his chart not to give him amoxicillin in the future."

tamklue23 replied: "He's allergic to amoxicillin and probably any other pennicillin based medicines. Don't worry and don't panic though! As long as you've stopped giving it to him, the rash will go away and he'll be fine. But you need to get him to the doctor so the doc can give him something different to treat whatever it was he was taking amoxicillin for. My daughter had an infection when she was little and we went through the same thing."

amberlicious81 replied: "thats what happens to me when i take it. ever since i was a kid. my brother and mom too. so i dont take it. its an allergic reaction"

san replied: "Yes, I had red rash around joints and joint pain as an adult taking it. It was painful enough that I now always make a point of saying I'm alergic to Amoxicillin if I'm given a medical questionaire."

I have been taking amoxicillin for a little over a week now and have developed a rash, do I have mono? I went to the doctor last week for recurring sore throat and recurring fever and continuous cough that had started two weeks ago. I had gone to the doctor then too, but the doctor just checked for strep. This time the doctor said i had white patches in my throat and pus. He said it was either an ear infection and virus or mono. He gave me amoxicillin and said if i did not get better in three days to give him a call and they would do a test for mono, but i got better. He told me to make an appointment ten days later. Well today I woke up with red bumps on my arms and hands that resembled mosquito bites and a huge red rash on my legs which is red and bumpy which have been itcy every now and then. Now that the itching has subsided i just see red dots. Is it possible I have mono although the rash from amoxicillin occured rather late?

Kit replied: "you could be allergic to it, i am. as well as mold and penecillin, as well as having seasonal allergies, which are starting again"

sweet tea replied: "You could be allergic- allergic reactions can occur even if you had taken the medication before and had no reaction. It also could be that you were exposed to sunlight. I break out in splotchy red spots when I am on antibiotics and go outdoors for long periods of time. Call your doc just to be on the safe side."

hopeymagoo replied: "A rash is not generally seen with mono. You are probably having an allergic reaction to the amoxicillin. Call your doctor in the morning and tell the nurse what is happening. In the meantime if you develop difficulty breathing have someone take you to the ER immediately. If you can't get a ride immediately call an ambulence because you could be going into anaphalactic shock which can be lethal in an extremely short amount of time. You might want to wait to take your morning dose until after you talk to the doctor or their nurse."

Are symptoms of SJS a rash all over my body, red, swollen face, itching after taking antibotics for 9 days? Could this possibly be Stephens Johnsons Syndrome? The rash is even on the palms of the hands. Facial swelling went down after 1 day of discontinuing the amoxicillin and a steroid shot. The face remains red in color. My entire body is covered with a rash that looks like red freckles that itch.

Halo replied: "You might be allergic to Pennicillin. There is a 5-7% chance of have allergic reactions from amoxicillin, if you're allergic to Pennicillin. Take liquid Benadryl. It can make you drowsy, but will help."

amoxicillin allergy? 18 mo old with fine prickly rash all over? My son took Amoxicillin for one week following an ear infection. Day 7 (today) he broke out in a rash all over his body. Tiny red raised rash. Is this an allergy? The med was stopped today as he finished his entire 7 day course.

bec replied: "I don't think that it would take 7 days for the rash to appear! My son is allergic to Nurofen (I'm in Australia, its a pain med) and the rash appeared a few hours after his first dose! I think that you should call the doctor who prescribed the meds and get him checked out!"

DG replied: "Why are you asking us--if this is a reaction to amoxicillin--you should call your DR or Pediatrician--and not be asking us...I mean it's good to ask questions--but in matters of health-time is an issue..that makes lingering with US an issue. Perhaps you should advise your Dr..if the Physician says don't worry--than don't but you don't need our permission to ask them..that's what you pay them for.. Allergies may not happen right away..they may take a while to develop a reaction. For instance--if you've been eating strawberries all your life-and you are 45 years old--could you suddenly have a reaction to eating them? Yes..sometimes it takes a while for a level to be attained that a reaction happens..The straw that finally breaks the camel's back -so to speak. It was a reaction.,,to the Amoxicillin--or some other allergen. Let the Dr decide. WE can't tell from here..and YOUR child is important enough to not to take the word someone on Yahoo Answers-who may be a long time experienced parent--or a know it all 7th grader. You don't know...BUT your Dr knows...so ask your Dr. Right?!"

wondryrgrl replied: "I had a similar reaction the first time I took Penicillin. The rash didn't start until the last day of the meds. He may have a rash on the palms of his hands and soles of his feet. Take him back to the doctor to verify."

momof4 replied: "my daughter has a penicillin allergy and also got her first symptoms about 5 days into the antibiotics (as with all allergies, it takes more than one exposure to show symptoms). it's quite possible it was a reaction to the penicillin. however, some viruses also can cause rashes that look somewhat like allergic rashes. since whether it's an allergy or not will likely affect what medications he gets for the rest of his life, take him in ASAP while he still has the rash for a doctor's opinion. if it is in fact an amoxycillin allergy, he will not be able to have augmentin or any of the "cillin" antibiotics. fortunately, there are lots of other choices available, as well."

Mummabear replied: "It's sounds more like measles, to me. Both my sons had it recently, even though they have both been immunised for it. Immunisation only has a 85% success rate. But take him back to the doctor to check it out properly."

S M replied: "Yes, yes, YES this could be an Amoxicillin allergy! My daughter is allergic to Amoxicillin, and we found out because every time we gave it to her, she broke out in a rash 7 days later. She also can't take Augmentin because of this allergy. The first time, it was a fine, prickly rash when she was about 15 months old. My pediatrician said it was probably a heat rash, because it was July. Each progressive time she took Amoxicillin for an infection, the rashes got worse and worse. The last time she took it, when she was about 24 months, she broke out in hives all over her body that lasted for 3 days, and disfigured her face until they went away. It was difficult to realize for us because my daughter also tends to break out in mild excema rashes occasionally, so because the allergy kept manifesting itself a full 7 days after her first Amoxicillin dose, we didn't think anything about it until the bad hives appeared. When we took her to the doctor for the hives, that is when we realized the pattern, and the pediatrician let us know that it can take up to a week for an Amoxicillin allergic reaction to manifest itself. Thank goodness my daughter didn't stop breathing! Please talk to your pediatrician so what happened to my daughter doesn't ever happen to your son. If it is an allergy, it needs to be written in his medical records as soon as possible."

kitty replied: "no, its not. he would have broken out sooner. he is young enough that you really need to get him to a doctor - does he have a fever? seem like his ear aches? idk what he was on amoxicillin for but full body rashes ususally go with scarelt fever, which gets brought on by milder infections that dont get taken care of properly. not saying you didnt take care of him right, just maybe amoxicillin wasnt what he needed. by all means get baby to the doctor. good luck. hope baby gets better soon"

lillifergirl replied: "OMG. I am freakin out. My 13 month old was just treated for a double ear infection with amoxicillan and approximately the 7th day he broke out with that crazy red bumpy prickily rash. He did finish is meds also. He seems to be in a good mood tho, no fever and eating and pooping normal. Just that crazy rash. My sister had mentioned that his antibiotic could do that. Now I totally believe her. Then I found your question on a google search. I think I will still bring him him in on Monday tho, just to make sure. (Sunday today and we do not have an urgent care clinics in our area) I feel better tho, knowing it has happened to others. I hope your baby is feeling better. Has his rash gotten better yet? Did it spread to his face? Just wondering. Thanks."

Vher replied: "I suspect its a measle. When a child is allergic on certain drugs, he feels very itchy and uncomfortable. Some may suffer shortness of breath and will cause death. So once an allergy occurs, you must bring him to the doctor."

Amoxicillin Rash Remedies ? Back on the 19th November my doctor prescribed me Amoxicillin for a persistant sinus infection and on the 6th or 7th day of taking it I went pinky red over my neck and chest and arms and back. I saw my doctor on the 30th and he said it was an Amoxicillin rash and he put me on a course of antihystemines ( certrizine) and so far the rash has sort of bleached into my skin so I'm getting a pale version and it's very slowly going. I just want to know how long could this take to clear and are there any natural remedies for it? I'd appreciate any helpful answers please.

amanda86marie replied: "You're going to hate this and it's going to sound like a cliche but drink lots of water. The water will help the antihistamine do its job and will help flush the rest of the antibiotic from your system faster."

Breenie replied: "I would say stick to the antihistamine because its the first hand treatment for any allegies. It your symptoms persist then re-consult your doctor for another drug choice that might work better."

Queen of the Dust Mites replied: "If the rash wasn't fading, I would suggest systemic cortosteroids, but you seem to be past that stage. At this point, you are going to have to wait it out. Don't be surprised if once the rash fades it starts to peel. That is common with penicillin reactions. Just moisturize so that your skin is not further irritated. What is REALLY important is that from this day forward every single time that you see any sort of doctor (dentist, chiropractor, whatever) you tell them that you are allergic to penicillins. Subsequent reactions will be quicker and more severe."

how long does the amoxicillin rash last and what can i do to get rid of it? ok so i have this rash all over my body, from head to toe, and i havent taken amoxicillin for 3 days. at first the doctor perscribed it even tho i didnt have strup throat, just a sore one. and i just got over mono and the rash appeared yesterday morning, it wasnt bad but then today its horrible, its all ichy and red. i cant go to school and its painful, does anyone know what helps and what i can do to get rid of it. it would be much appreciated. thank you if you have any answers.

shaneniganz71 replied: "Sounds like you had an allergic reaction. Take some benadryl and call your doc to let him know about the reaction, he may give you some steroids that will also help get rid of the rash. Good luck!"

Laura replied: "My son has an amoxicillin rash, too. The rash from head to toe is, from what I've heard, not typical of the amoxicillin rash. Usually it would stay on the trunk of the body, possibly extending to the arms and face. Either way, call your doctor's office and tell them that you've had a reaction to the amoxicillin. They'll see you today and determine the best course of treatment. Don't call and wait to see the doctor if you start wheezing or experience a shortness of breath, go directly into their office or an urgent/emergency care office because it may be a sign of a more serious reaction."

Sick, taking amoxicillin/rash? I've been sick for a couple of weeks now. it started off with a horrible sinus infection and also a horrible sore throat with white patches. my doctor put me on amoxicillin for the sinus infection and said the throat was also because of the sinus infection. everything started clearing up within 3 days. About a week later, i wake up with red spots all over my body! i stopped taking my medicine for about two days and the sore throat is back and somewhat stuffy nose, but the rash is almost gone. could it possibly be mono? or just an allergic reaction? what other medicine is available if i'm allergic to penicillin?

iDea replied: "it can be an allergic reaction. possible in your condition. alternative medicine: erythromycin."

Maggie replied: "Heres the deal. You clearly had an allergic reaction as the rash appeared after the penicillin and faded when you stopped it. The infection was apparently responding to it as your symptoms returned when it was discontinued. That means infection is still present. Many people are allergic to penicillin. Note: Inform any future doctors of this as another dose could be deadly. Mono usually presents with stomach pain, swollen glands, fever & severe overwhelming fatigue in addition to the sore throat. White patches on the throat usually mean strep which is serious & contagious.. You still need antibiotics, but your doc needs to decide on a substitute. There are tons to choose from... ~Hope this helps~!"

amoxicillin rash question? My DD who is 7 is having an allergic reaction to amoxicillian. Weve already seen the Dr. He gave her Xyzal to help with the rash. (Its really not a rash per say...its just redness under the skin, not bumpy and raised) Its been 3 days and she doesnt seem to be getting any better. In fact, today the rash spread even further down her arms and is more red on her face. She thinks she looks stupid and she feels itchy and terrible! How long before this horrible rash goes away? she is off the anibibotics...she has been since tuesday...she still has the rash.

Chicken in Black replied: "Has she stopped the amocoxillian? If not the reactions will continue until she has stopped taking it, or worse it can progress to a more severe reaction. I'd call the doctor again, say you're stopping it, and see about another medication. There are lots of antibiotics available without your daughter having to suffer through taking one she is allergic to. Honestly I'd refuse anything in that family of medicines, like penicillin, because they are mold based and can all trigger a reaction."

versantly replied: "continue taking benedryl as directed and follow up with the doctor."

Hui Meng C replied: "ask the doctor, just put some lotion will do.,skin too dry"

danni_elle replied: "Maybe she has a mild reaction to penicillin... I myself can't take any penicillin based meds due to getting a rash and throwing up severely.... Speak to your doctor and maybe ask if you can try another antibiotic that is not penicillin based.... And i don't understand why the doctor is continuing her on these antibiotics anyway after forming a rash you would assume he would try something different than just giving her another medication to remove the side effects... Maybe a second opinion is needed.. Good Luck!!!"
