Macrobid or Keflex for a gum abscess? Will either of those work? I should clarify: I'm asking because these are medications I have had no previous bad reactions to. I don't plan on using old ones. Thanks!

God's Girl replied: "Don't know. Google it."

jessica rabbit replied: "you really shouldn't use old antibx from your medicine cabnet.......the dr or dentist will prescrib what they feel is best....and prolly will be clindamycin"

Alli replied: "Macrobid (brand) also known as Nitrofurantoin (generic) is an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections. So, I would say no that would not work. Keflex (brand) also known as Cephalexin (generic) is also an antibiotic. It is usually used to treat many different types of bacterial infections such as bronchitis, tonsillitis, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. So technically this one could potentially work on treating gum abscesses."

Sabrina M replied: "I am not sure about the keflex but I know for sure macorobid is only for use as treating bladder and kidney infections,,it is best to go to the Dr if you have an abscess as they can become dangerous the best antibiotic would be penicillin........."

DrAcidBath replied: "keflex can work, but penicillin is the standard for oral infections. if the infection is severe, you can kick it up a notch with augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulinate) or add flagyl to the penicillin regimen. if you are allergic to penicillin, you are at risk for allergy to keflex, which is a cephalosporin. there is an abscess for a reason and it must be treated. the antibiotics are only part of the treatment. see your dentist ASAP."

What is a safe antibiotics when pregnant? What is a safe antibiotics when pregnant? I can't take bactrim, or any kind of sulfa drug. or any penicillin, keflex, macrobid or macrodantin. I've had this UTI for a little over a month now, and it hasn't gone away because i have to stop taking the antiboidic due to having reactions. I need something with none or very few side effects. any suggestions? what stores have pure cranberry juice? i've went to different places around here and can only find a cranberry cocktail

Liz B replied: "Try cranberry pills and or cranberry juice, it's total natural and safe for you. I take them dailey thoroughout both of my pregnancies as well. If it doesn't clear up it could lead to a kidney infection. I had one during my second pregnancy and my doctor, gave my something to clear it up without effects."

Jessica replied: "cranberry juice. i had a really bad uti once with no health insurance when i was really poor. i went to the store and got bottles and bottles of cranberry juice and sat there for two days alternating cranberry juice with water. i didn't know it then, but they also have cranberry supplement pills you can get at the drugstore. take those too. seriously as much water and cranberry juice as you can handle, till you think you are going to puke or explode. I was peeing about every 20-30 minutes all day. but it went away and it cost less than a doctor visit and a prescription."

bailezra replied: "Different classes of antibiotics are used to treat different disease states, based on the pathogens that most commonly cause the infection, and which antibiotics have the best coverage for those pathogens. There is not one single antibiotic that is suitable for all infections. Your doctor will know which antibiotics are Pregnancy Category B, which are considered safe to take during pregnancy. He/she can find and appropriate drug, perhaps a macrolide like Biaxin or Zithromax, since you appear to be sensitive to cephalosporin drugs like Keflex."

Melissa H replied: "My doctor gave me augmentin but I don't know if it is recommended if you cant have penicillian."

Ms. Barista replied: "I agree with cranberry juice. But make sure it's 100% juice though, not like the Ocean Spray cranberry cocktail. It costs a little more, but it's much more beneficial. Also make sure you're still drinking lots of water too. ____________________________ ETA you can find pure cranberry juice in natural and health food stores. Or if your local grocery store has a natural food section, it would be in there."

I get UTI's all the time, but im allergic to all the good uti meds.. any suggestions? im allergic to bactrim and cipro, and leviquin.. I have taken macrobid, keflex and a couple others.. nothing seems strong enough.. im so sick of these infections i could cry.. please help

★ Kelly ★ replied: "If your getting them all the time it might be a good idea to go for tests, I had 4 in 15 months and my doctor said it was cause for concern, but everything came back clear. I'm not sure what meds you could take, all I can say is to tell your doctor that they are not good enough. I get prescribed antibiotics and within an hour of taking the first one I am virtually symptom free and back to normal, you didn't say how long after taking the medication you have pain/symptoms for, but I wouldn't be very happy with my doctor if I had the symptoms for any longer than 6 hours after starting medication. good luck! xx"

jacqui238 replied: "A few things that stop me from ever having any problems 'down there'. Firstly, drink heaps of water. The more active things are the less chance there is for infections to establish themselves as everything is constantly being flushed through. Secondly, drink as much cranberry juice as you can stand, and preferably one with no added sugar as too much sugar can make the infections worse. Cranberry juice is great for you anyway, but one awesome side-effect is that it makes the lining of your whole urinary system more slippery and bacteria will struggle to attach itself. Whilst useful for preventing UTI's, high doses of cranberry juice can even sometimes cure them. I also take a daily probiotic. The bacteria that are good for you help you digest etc but they're also useful because they too don't like any bacteria that hurt you - since you're their home and will help you fight them. The problem is anti-biotics kill your good bacteria too and actually leave you more open to infection than you were beforehand, so I try to avoid taking them as much as possible. Hope this helps :)"

versantly replied: "consider better hygeine, avoiding caffeine, and a follow up with your urologist."

Shannon S replied: "Well first of all jacqui's answer was perfect i had the same problem and i did exactly what she said, haven't had one in years :)"

jabar1939 replied: "Try putting one Asodophis pill in uterian opening at bedtime."

Ali replied: "I totally know what you're going through. UTIs are terrible! Like you, I am allergic to bactrim and cipro and also macrobid. I finally found Augmentin and that seems to work for me. You might have already tried it but I thought I'd recommend it if you haven't. Also, it might be wise to start figuring out what is triggering your UTIs. After suffering on and off for many years, I finally realized my problem was laundry detergent! I have to use a dye and perfume free detergent and have to rinse all my underwear through a second full wash cycle in the machine without soap to rinse them well. My personal routine also includes taking 1000mg vitamin C (the ascorbic acid keeps the urine acidic, making bacteria less likely to grow), I eat a cup of yogurt, try to drink 1.5 liters of water a day and I avoid caffeine and too much sugar. I also have to avoid bubblebaths, hot tubs and cant wash with any soap around my private area (although washing down there is really important, just do it with water). And I don't know if you're sexually active but it's a good idea to pee after sex if you are. And don't use condoms with spermacide. That's about all I can think of. I'm sorry you're suffering and I hope I was able to help a little."

Macrobid, need some advise? On Monday my doc prescribed macrobid for me due to an UTI. Usually I am allergic to penicillin, sulfa, keflex and trimethoprim. I was kind of hesitant to take the macrobid cause I dont want another allergic reaction. I am feeling a bit funny since I take it, kind of nauseous right after intake and dizzy. It goes away after 2-3hrs after the intake of macrobid. The thing is on Friday I go on a 24hr flight and I am wondering whether I should stop the macrobid tomorrow or not. I dont want to get a serious allergic reaction while I am on the plane. I know about the risk getting this UTI back. I am drinking cranberry juice all day long, eating yogurt etc. I dont have any symptoms since monday after i started taking the fist dose of macrobid. I know that means nothing, the bacteria could still be there. I am not sure if I should stop taking it or not, first my doc said I need it only for 5 days but then I got my prescription for 7 days. Tomorrow would be the 4th day. Any advise?

confused replied: "Macrobid is pretty safe. I took it every day during my pregnancy, because I kept UTI's and bladder infections. You shouldn't just stop taking meds without talking to your doc first. Also, next time you think you are getting a UTI go to drug store and ask for AZO it works wonders. The pain will be gone almost instantly!! I wouldn't suggest it for a serious full-blown UTI but if you feel one coming on, give it a try next time. Hope i helped you."

Juliu C replied: "Any advice is not worth!!!!"

Dan H replied: "Keep taking the macrobid, and keep up with the cranberry and yogurt. If you were going to have a serious reaction it would have happened already. It sounds like recurrent UTI's are a problem for you, so taking the longer course is really what's best."

Recurrent bladder infection during pregnancy? I had a bladder infection early on in pregnancy that went away when treated with Macrobid. I just finished antibiotics(Keflex) on Tuesday for yet another bladder infection. I went to my weekly prenatal appointment and guess what? I have a damn bladder infection still. Now I have to take Keflex antibiotics 4 times a day instead of twice a day. I am sick of stupid bladder infections! Has anybody else had this happen to them during pregnancy? It's so frustrating! I'm not having sex so it's not caused by that and the only thing I ever drink besides water is milk and sometimes fruit juice. I drink so much water constantly. What the heck? Grr!

sweetie replied: "Everyone's bodies are different but my grandmother use to tell me all the time that she use to have the same problem. She had bladder and kidney problems through her whole pregnancy with each one of the kids and it got worst with each one. So your not the only one but Idk what would be causing it since you drink water, milk, and juice. Normally those things are caused by to much soda or tea."

Georgia replied: "everytime i go to the hospital they say i have a urine infection and to go to my doctors in a couple of days for testing again and in the mean time drink water an cranberry juice blah blah blah and everytime i go to the doctors im clear and this had happened 3 times now iv never actually had anitbiotics for it cuz its always cleared up and baby is fine an i have never had symptoms. and i also know someone who had a urine infection all the way thru her pregnancy lol she had a healthy baby thou dnt worry ur doin everythin u can"

hummingbird replied: "I had this happen to me. I have always been prone to UTI's-I used to get them a couple times a year, right before my period would start. My doctor said that some people are just prone to having them. The last couple weeks of my pregnancy, I had one, and it actually went into my kidneys and caused alot of issues. Just keep taking your meds, no sex and only water and cranberry juice. It'll go away once you have the baby-I actually haven't had one since-and it's been almost a year."

02.26.2010 <3 replied: "everyone is different. so im not sure what could keep causing you to have them over and over again. but i had one earlier in my pregnancy bc i was getting dehydrated so much and then i ended up with a UTI. and then a YEAST INFECTION from all the antibiotics they had me on. now.. KNOCK ON WOOD. i am fine.----GOOD LUCK KEEP DRINKING THE WATER"

8 months pregnant, urinating every 15 minutes, Doc says not UTI?? Alright, before I got pregnant I used to suffered from chronic UTIs. I had UTIs during this pregnancy like twice and they were from the e-coli virus; which is normal; because of this my OB said to take 100 mg of Macrobid daily until I give birth to prevent a future UTI. I had pain again, this time I had this horrible pain when I woke up in the middle of the night becuase my bladder was SO full. I called my doc and she said I may have a UTI. Went to the docs office and they said it looks like you have a UTI and were going to run the urine culture to make sure and but gave me Keflex assuming I had a UTI. 3 days later they call and said I don't have a UTI and to stop taking Keflex and to conitnue taking macrobid daily. My question, has anyone who was pregnant had the need to use the restroom every 15-20 minutes without it being a UTI? Or are my docs making a mistake on this? I stopped taking the keflex and I am going to the bathroom evey 15-20 minutes.Thank you in advanced!

Jessie K replied: "The best thing to do after checking with the doctor is to check here- we know more than doctors."

Mommy-to-be replied: "the baby is sitting on ur bladder right now..... its very normal but sucks"

niffer replied: "Well, not literally every 15 minutes. But it feels like it!"

!!Just Peachy!! replied: "It is normal! Best of luck to you!"

Raul L replied: "My wife goes to the bathroom every 15-20 minutes. all the time! lol its completly normal. Sometimes she goes more often especially if she had a lot of water before hand. Is this your first pregnancy. Oh my wife is 36 weeks pregnant by the way."

digitalchinky replied: "Nope, not UTI, this is normal. Frustrating, annoying, and completely normal. Be glad it's not PUPPPS :-) 1 thousand mosquito bites would feel quite soothing in comparison."

BROKENHEARTED replied: "YES ONCE U R THAT FAR ALONG IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY U WILL HAVE TO PEE EVERTIME U TURN AROUND GOOD LUCK"

Froggy replied: "yeah I was in the bathroom for pretty much a month and a half! once he dropped and his head was sitting on my bladder I had to go every 5 seconds it felt like. It's pretty normal once you get that far along."

Belinda G replied: "oh yeah perfectly normal.. itll pass at like 32 weeks then start happening again till birth, your bladder is being squished ... best of luck"

Baby #2 on the way replied: "you may just have a very small bladder and the way the baby is taking up space inside of u could be causing a lot of pressure on it. u've already done what u need to do which is consult a doctor. they gave u their advice, go with it until u feel u need a second opinion. it is possible for a doctor to make a mistake.. if u still feel like something is just "not right" seek another opinion."

Veronica G replied: "Yes ...Yes...Yes... Funny, I was just telling my daughter that today. She is three months pregnant. She said that she is getting up two times a night to use the bathroom. I told her to just wait at the end you go every 15 to 20 minutes. She was shocked. I thought that happens to everyone. So yes to your question. I had five children."

mashale C replied: "maybe you should pay us to be your doctor but this normal the babys weight is on your bladder"

babygirl replied: "i think u should stop taking those medications because your' not experiencing uti or anything...frequent voiding during the 8th month of pregnancy is normal because your little baby is pressing on your bladder.its normal, trust me, I'm a midwifery student...=) but even those who aren't midwifery students know this stuff anyway,,,=)"

jackmatt replied: "Sweetheart, you are 8 months pregnant. You have a watermelon sitting on your bladder 24/7. Its not an infection, its part of being pregnant! With all that pressure on your bladder, you can't always empty your bladder & therefore need to go more often. OB/GYN RN"

Irish lady replied: "Very Normal. The further along you become the more pressure the baby puts on your bladder. The baby is getting bigger and probably starting to drop. I wish I could tell you it gets better but it doesn't. Hang in there!!"

nspdeathangel replied: "Unfortunately normal and annoying. I am usually ok all day long but the second I lay down for bed the dams open. It also amazes me the sheer volume. I can have had nothing to drink for hours in anticipation of sleep and still really really go every 15 minutes. I got so bad I asked for depends for Valentine's Day as a joke."

29 Weeks pregnant and worst UTI of my life....? I am 29 weeks along and I have had about 4 UTI's with this pregnancy. I have been prescribed Macrobid, Vicodin (for the bad pain), Pyridium, Keflex amungst a few other things. I always take the meds as advised. Tonight I had a UTI hit like a ton of bricks. I mean, I know what BAD UTI''s feel like and this is one that would make Mother Teresa curse. I took a Macrobid and a Vicoden about 6 hours ago and been drinking a ton of water and cranberry juice and I have not gotten any relief. I am having all the normal UTI symptoms (extreme pain when pee'ing, extreme pain and pressure in the bladder area) and I also have strange lower back (more hip) pain but just on the right side. My OB that I called at 1am said to watch for contractions, but since I have all the meds at home to basically deal. I have been pacing my floors in pain for 4 hours. No contractions just continous pain from the UTI. ANything else I can do, any suggestions?

thebattwoman replied: "First off avoid coffee if you're drinking it, it's notorious for irritating the tract with toxins in a UTI. Also avoid acidic foods such as grapefruit, spices, orange juice etc. Live yoghurt can also be beneficial and actually baking soda put in water can help because of its alkalinity. Pouring warm water over the area when you urinate helps with the burning sensation, up your vitamin c levels and try a heat pad placed where the pain is. HOWEVER, I don't like how the doctors have set you adrift on this, especially as you're in such pain. Pain pills aren't good for the baby and if you're getting no relief with them then something more needs to be done. They should really consider IV antibiotics to clear this up once and for all."
