Crystal Lite Caffeine in Q&A
Is there caffeine in Crystal Lite? Something else to keep me awake? Recently I started drinking Crystal Lite (pink lemonade) and find now that I have a hard time sleeping. There is no caffeine listed in the ingredients, and I just can't figure it out. Has anyone else had similar experiences? Any idea what ingredient could be causing this? Thanks for your ideas and help!

ck replied: "The artificial sweetener can be irritating to some people. You might be particularly sensitive to it. Just switch to plain water or unsweetened tea if you can. Artificial sweetener is terrible to your body. Even splenda."

I need information on soda and crystal lite.? I love soda but I know it can be bad for you. I found Diet Rite, it has no caffeine, no sodium, no carbs and no calories. Is it still bad to drink or can I get away with it? Also, I found a generic version of crystal lite, is it really true what the commercials say that it is a way to get your water intake? I have not been counting it as water, but it would be nice if I could.

~expecting #2~ replied: "It has aspartame, and aspartame can be bad for you in the long run. Most soda's that have the diet or zero carb means they use artificial sweetner. Mostly use is aspartame."

thejanith replied: "Water that's been tampered with (soda, fruit-flavored drinks, etc) is still water and counts as water."

banks replied: "I was a horrible soda addict. The one thing I did to get off the sodas was to replace with unsweet tea and then later with decaf unsweet tea. It does not have any artifical unhealthy stuff in it and is full of antioxidants. Once I got over the caffeine withdrawals, I actually felt great and did not miss the sodas at all. Now they just taste syrupy."

Do you allow your Type 1 child to drink sugar free, caffeine free soda freely? Does the limitation on sugar free drink options cause you to pick your battles with the artificial sweetener risks? Or do you stick with Crystal Lite?

MATT replied: "Im a type 1 myself and i would say it is safe for your child to drink it in moderation. Even though there are no sugars or caffeine the concentrates in soda often give diabetics a jittery feeling when drank habitualy. I would reccommend allowing it in moderation but keep the diet versatile so ur child never feels jittery and to insure that he/she is gettin adequate nutrients."

Melanie replied: "i'm 16. type 1. in a study trial for diabetes with the University of Rochester/ Strong hospital. have been an independent needle kid. for a year and a half now. first of all. i don't really drink pop. but when i do. most of the time i drink the regular. on occasion i drink diet. but if you take a shot and everything. then the soda is just as bad for you as it is for anyone else. i think its kinda ridiculous people think you can't eat anything. that would be true if you were out of control and didn't take care of yourself. but if your in control its not bad for you. i'm a very healthy kid with 10 diseases/ disorders. i look normal. act normal. and am fine. i would stick with regular pop. because i also don't like the artificial sweeteners. they're not healthy."

Noccie replied: "I allow my 16 year old son to drink sugar free drinks at his discretion. After his diagnosis, I just try not to get freaked out about artificial sweeteners because without those products his diet would be somewhat bland. The fact is that there's no sound scientific data to show that artificial sweeteners cause any health problems."
