Good source for Lithium-Ion Batteries? What would be a cost-efficient source for batteries that could *assist vehicles. I'm toying with ideas for retrofitting power-assist/ add-ons to gas-only vehicles for increased MPG. Lithium-Ion has made its way to cordless tools and can be purchased for about $120 per h.p. or probably more like 1/2 h.p for sustained output (i.e., Dewalt 36 Volt = "750 watts" fully charged) The idea is probably for power-assist during acceleration only. What battery qualities should I look for? In case someone wants to flame me for thinking out loud, that's fine, but crunch some numbers and show me why this is wont work. Thanks in advance.

Numbat replied: "You should look at Lithium Nanophosphate (LiFePO4), which by the way, are the cells used in the DeWalt 36v battery packs. The very high power discharge capabilities of these cells makes them very attractive. Combined with very safe operation, high cycle life and good energy density and they top the current field for mobile operations. Lithium Nickel Cobalt Manganese Oxide Li(NiCoMn)O2 is also a contender but is not as safe as Lithium nanophosphate. Check out this site for information: "

What is the best 18V lithium-ion cordless drill out now? I originally purchased a Dewalt drill with Nicad batteries. However,after fooling around with the lighter lithium based cordless drill/drivers I've decided to go that route. I'll be using this drill from everything from hanging blinds to decking. I'm not a contractor but more of a DIY weekend warrior. The one thing that I was concerned about was being able to drill into concrete. Seems like the drill/drivers that have the hammerdrill feature are on the heavy side and I was looking for something lighter. Am I better off just getting a seperate corded hammerdrill or Hilti drill for the very few times that I may need to drill into concrete? So far I've had my eye on Makita's,Hitatchi,Ridgid to name a few. Can anyone offer some opinions? Is anyone familiar with Ridgid? They came out with a new 18V lithium with a larger battery than the new compact Makita(black & white). Ridgid offers a lifetime warranty(even on the batteries). I'd like to hear from anyone who has used their tools. The 18V is around 4.5lbs.>

cowboydoc replied: "My son and I share a De Walt hammer drill for the times we need it, I will stand with a De Walt anytime, used one for over twenty years on the job. My son-in-law is a Master electrician and uses the same, he has a Milwaukee cordless hammer but it cost a fortune, it's a special and I don't even know where he got it, I've never seen one in the area. He claimes he got it from a special contractor and paid $360.00 for it. High for a week-end warrior."

Aaron A replied: "makita was the first to switch to lithium, so they are definitely ahead in the game. I prefer ni-cad do a short study on batteries and youll find they are more forgiving. Lithium has a long shelf life that's about all that makes them better you can charge them and they will still have the same voltage years from now. On the down side they cant be cycled as many times and loose power over more charge cylces. I could go on forever but if you get a couple free hours do some research and youll see they aren't really all they are hyped up to be."

monster replied: "Dewalt is made by black and decker...made in china....if you can afford it go the jap route with the makita....it's quality you can hold....try the impact driver ....they are small but pack a huge punch......as for concrete drilling...our shop has used and abused Bosch and Hilti...ether one is worth the 150-200$...yes go corded on this..."
