should I not drink coffee while taking effexor? Have been taking 175mg for 4 days, and have not slept in 3 nights. Was taking 35mg for a week previous to this dose, and slept fine. Will I eventually adjust and be able to sleep? Does coffee have a bad reaction with this drug? I feel I need it to "wake up", but then feel anxious. I feel like such a mess right now.

stupid sh*t by girlicious rules! replied: "no"

hipieeee replied: "my mom takes effexor and she drinks like 6 coffees a day lol. if you're finding that you still cant sleep after like a week talk to your doctor about sleep medication. i switched medications a lot and i could never sleep so my doctor wrote me a prescription for sleeping pills. the only thing with the pills though is that you become really dependant on them."

Evie's Alter Ego replied: "I was on 325mg of effexor and never really had an issue with coffee. I think that effexor is the issue. I never slept when I was on it. Effexor did me more harm than good."

Just me replied: "From 35mg to 175mg is too big of a jump at once. Some people are drug sensitive and need to increase gradually. I'd cut out the coffee for awhile and drop back down to 35mg; then increase a little each week."

Dee Dee P replied: "I am having the same problem. I am taking 150mg. I actually feel more nervous and hyper. I went from one extreme to the other. I was very tired and depressed to now having alot of energy and it has helped my depression. I rather feel this way than the way I felt before. It's almost like the medication needs to be tweeked a little bit. I drink GoChi juice before I go to bed at night and it seems to help. GoChi juice cost about $50.00 a bottle but will last about 1.5 months. You take 2 to 4 ounces a day. Be sure and take it at night. It is full of antioxidents, actually everyone should take it for their health!!! Goggle it on the internet. Good luck"

Deyon W replied: "DRINK A MODERATE AMOUNT"

Has anyone else switched from Paxil to Effexor? I was taking Paxil (40 mg) for 7 years. It worked for the anxiety the whole time but stopped working for the depression. 8 days ago I was switched to Effexor (150 mg) and I feel like I drank 10 cups of coffee and it is hard to focus. Does this get better or should I take half a dose tomorrow?

Sue L replied: "I'm on Effexor too, & I know that sometimes I get like that- crazy hyper, fidgety, can't sit still, etc. I am on 110 mg myself, which is a very low dose, & I took 150 ml by mistake the other day, & I was boucing off the walls..lol! U probably just need to be on a lower dose, like 110 mg. Talk to ur DOC..."

ASR replied: "I take 300mg Effexor and do very well on it. I built up to this dose over time. It might take a few weeks for the your body to adjust. I would not recommend messing around with your dosage that is something for the doctor to determine. If you are taking Effexor XR it is extended release and a certain amount stays in your system working until the next dosage is administered. If you are willing to wait and see how it will work for you then give it a chance. If not then you should schedule an appointment with your Doctor to discuss other medication options. I have had medicines stop working for me like the Paxil did for you. It could be that if you try something different for a few months your Doctor might be willing to but you back on Paxil. That is what I had to do with Trazodone. I was on it for several years then it stopped working. I went on a two different medicines, one after the other for two years, then went back on the Trazodone. I just needed a break from it. Maybe that is what is happening to you."

What can I do to get more energy and not sleep so much? I never have any energy and always sleep all day. I'm taking Effexor XR 75mg and I believe it might be the culprit. But I can't go off because My anxiety will become to servere, nothing else works better than Effexor. I've been on stimulants but the side effects were to bad. I just feel tired and can't seem to do anything because of it. Coffee doesn't work either. What can I do to get the drive to want to get out of bed?

Luna replied: "Coffee."

Alyson K replied: "-Get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. -Eat at least 3 healthy meals a day -Drink a lot of water during the day -Don't eat a lot of sugar or drink a lot of caffeine, they just cause you to crash later. -Exercising usually gives you energy as well. -If all else fails, do what I do and have an hour nap"

nvm_95 replied: "You can drink Cofee,Tea, or energy drinks. You can eat food that is healthy such as eggs, greens, peanut butter, etc."

JackTango replied: "cocaine"

Liz O replied: "You need some good multivitamins for sure. Also, you need to ask your doctor if there is anything else you can take for your anxiety that won't make you feel so tired. Exercise also helps because it speeds up your metabolism and getting yourself into a routine will help get you going every morning. Good luck. I hope this helps."

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Take an energy multivitamin every day."

Jorge A replied: "listen to jacktango's answer"

CC replied: "find peace. release resentment, anger, guilt, fear, and shame. these take alot of energy away from us and clutter the mind and cause exhaustion. wake up in the morning with a preset challenge that has meaning. Even if it is just a little something like Im not going to have a messy home or something like that just in case."

How do I deal with coming off the drugs? I had an addiction to pain medications given by my doctor and I took them pretty heavily for about three weeks. I have now been off them about two and while the physical symptoms of withdraw are gone my body is constant looking for an "upper." I have a cup of plain coffee in the morning which helps but then I spend my afternoons and evenings depressed even though I am on Effexor. What should I do?

The Helpful One Jr. replied: "Drink a helluva lot of beer and bang a prostitute."

R.I.P. Billy Mays replied: "Exercise, running chemically makes you feel less depressed."

Marissa replied: "ok the other guy is an idiot tell some one seriously"

MusicIsMyRelease replied: "get out and do something! exorcise! Take your dog for a walk! go out with friends! ummmm... Maybe if a little caffeine helps try some different energy drinks...."

Beth G replied: "Whoever prescribed your effexor should be notified that you're still having feelings of depression. It may just take a few more weeks for the effexor to kick in all the way. You might try seeing a therapist and try out some talk therapy. Most people don't like talk therapy, but if you stick with it and the medication, you'll see results."

Exhaustion from Pristiq (or Effexor)? Will it wear off? Hello, fellow antidepressant takers - I'm Bipolar II, mostly depressed. I take Lamictal and Wellbutrin, and I added Pristiq about two weeks ago. I feel like the Pristiq is already helping my mood, which is wonderful, because nothing else has helped so much. The only problem is that I am incredibly tired. I sleep for like 12 hours, having the weirdest epic dreams, and I feel like I could keep on sleeping. Then about 8 hours after I wake up, I'm dozing off again. I know sleepiness can be a side effect (although other people report trouble sleeping). But this is really out of control! It's not the same as when I stay in bed due to depression or laziness - I'm just out cold. I have been on Effexor, which is a similar drug, but I don't remember being this exhausted. I've tried to modify my diet and exercise, I drink plenty of water, and I've tried both lots of coffee and no coffee, but no luck so far. I want to keep taking the Pristiq because other than the sleeping, I haven't felt this good in a while. So, my questions are: Has anyone else had this experience with Pristiq, or with Effexor? Did it wear off, and if so, how long did it take? Has anyone tried to supplement it with a more stimulating drug, like Adderall, Strattera, or Provigil? What was the effect? Thanks!

angels love replied: "While I have no experience with Pristiq I do with Effexor. For me it worked for a Little while but then seized I was always tired on it as well. I would not add or take away anything without talking to your doctor."

I am quitting Effexor Xr with Prozac and Lorazapam? I have been on Effexor 75 mg for 5 yrs, it was given to me for side effect from a Hysterectomy (I couldn't use HRT) I have tried this on my own before by 1/2 ing my dosages but couldn't do it. The side effects are just too much! I finally went to a psychiatrist for help and he prescribed 1/2 dose of Effexor along with Prozac 10 mg for 1 week and then just Prozac for 1-2 weeks and then just stop. He also gave me the Lorazapam for when I just can't handle the side effects (which is all the time) This coming Friday will be the end of my 1 week of just Prozac and I have to tell you I feel like Dog Snot! I am jittery, bleary eyed and I am still having the Electric chaos shocks. Not as bad as in the beginning but they are still there. I feel like I'm coming down with something again,I just got over a major cold 3 weeks ago)I'm coughing sneezing and blowing my nose. I'm hot, I'm cold, I'm tired, nothing tastes good my coffee, my cigarettes? Has anyone done this? How much longer before I feel right? This Lorazapam packs a wallop, I look like I'm drugged. Sleeping is definitely not a problem with those things! I have a follow up with the Dr. in another week, but I guess I'm looking for someone who has actually been thru this and came out the other side drug free! I can't even stand the sound of my hairdryer right now. Makes getting ready for work in the morning interesting! Please share..... Thanks Just Me

My friend has depression and bad sleep habits. How can he wake up after taking too much medication? For example, he took during the day 375 mg of Effexor and at bed time (3 AM) took two Tylanol PM and one other former depression pill now used for inducing sleep in patients. He slept for 12 hours (to 3 PM) and even after " breakfast" he kept nodding off when he had work to do. He drank two cups of Coffee to try to wake up, but that did not work. What can he do to wake up if he also has no energy and no desire to do anything but sit around when he gets in this kind of situation. I mean something quick so he does not ruin the next night's sleep by sleepin any more that day and not being able to sleep a regular 8 or so hours? The answers are good for the long run and make more sense of this situation. But what to do if this happens again. Is there something to speed up recovery from the medicine so he wakes up quickly? Other times, he did eventually get alert before bed time, but then could not go to sleep at a normal hour so took more medicine. I think his doctor who gave the Rx knows about this and told him to cut down on the dose of the sleep medicine, but I don't know about the Tylenol. So, the hoped for answer is one that says how to get the first night's dose over with and how to go back to normal sleep the next night. Thanks for your interest and I hope this clarifies things more.

krazykritik replied: "It depends on the medication. E-mail me for more personal info if you want a good personal insight. In the meantime, cut the 'sleep' medication in half. If it was actually an antidepressant before, then it shouldn't hurt to chop it by 50%. You see, meds work slower when we sleep because our metabolic rate really slows down, so they have a much more slower rateof absorption. Therefore, when he wakes up, the medication is actually still being absorbed and thereby is still affecting him. Half the dosage while sleeping, in effect, is as potent as a full dose while awake. If this doesn't work, go to the doctor for a medication change."

ashleelizabeth19 replied: "i think that he needs to go to the doctors....maybe get on a real sleeping pill like lunesta....but watch him when he is on that....sleeping pills can make depressed people suicidal....it happened to me....but they work really well....."

rcpeabody1 replied: "Hmm. Is he taking the prescribed dose of Effexor? Why does he add the Tylenol PM? Did his doctor TELL him to continue taking the other antidepressant for sleep? This is why doctors have phone numbers -- Effexor can be kind of sedating and with the Tylenol PM and the other pill, no wonder. If he wants to try one more night before calling his doctor, tell him to take exactly what he was prescribed and to ditch the Tylenol PM for now. Add: Depression by itself causes problems with sleep. I wonder if it could have to do with the effexor as I was very unmotivated when on it. Anyway even if he can't sleep he shouldn't take the Tylenol PM -- it has dyphenhydramine which is pretty sedating. It's possible the drugs are causing the insomnia but he needs to talk to his doctor and stop taking so many different things."

A thing to add to my friend needs help? She also drinks loads of coffee Problems with friend taking EFFEXOR XR helpppppppppppppppppppppp... Hi there We are foreigners working in Mexico on a show, our best friend is on 1 tablet of EFFEXOR XR per day. She eats only one bowl of poridge per day and one yogurt, then dances in one to three shows per day (Alot of excersize) and lives on eating huge amounts of sweets. She was also taking Nicorette 15mg for 1 week, and also taking Dulcolax (Natural constipation laxative) The last week or so she has been comkplaining about not sleeping and heart pulpitating, she told us this medication was to control her heart from not getting anxiety attacks and for her split personality and depression disorders.. After reading here it seems that this isn't really for the heart, and more for anti depression (These medications normally raise blood pressue making heart beat faster??????)

crzylizzi replied: "I remain to what I said, it sounds like probable Bulemia, at least malnutrition, and a heart attack is likely, if not serious fainting spell. She needs to go to a doctor. And Effexor that I know of does not cause the heart to beat faster, but exercise and coffee does. See below: Effexor's Typical Side Effects: The usual for SSRIs and SNRIs - headache, nausea, dry mouth, sweating, sleepiness or insomnia, and diarrhea or constipation, weight gain, loss of libido and a host of other sexual dysfunctions. Not so common: Increased or lowered blood pressure, sweating, farting, anorexia, twitching, shock-like sensations. Also alcohol intolerance and/or alcohol abuse."

My doctor told me that if i were to wean off of 2mg klonopin/day I might be able to think more clearly? I am using effexor 300mg/day and wellbutrin xl 150mg/day. I stopped cold turkey about 3 days ago and haden't really had any real side effects except last night i had pretty bad night sweats. After drinking some coffee and eating breakfast i feel fine now and had a MUCH easier time waking up the last few days. Luckily nothing too stressful had grabbed ahold of me so far, but knowing i can get up easier to ease the stress on my wife/baby is very motivating. Just curious why stopping Klonopin might help my thoughts move along a bit better? Has anyone else weaned from a benzo class drug such as this and have any advise? Thanks and have a great weekend!!

Antidepressants - extreme lack of energy? Hello, I've battled with all the big name meds out there. I finally decided I don't want to be on them and I've discovered some things that have made my life so much easier. I really think I'm ready to get off this junk. I take effexor (150) and welbutrin (300) I dropped down down from 225 effexor and I felt... amazing.. better than I have felt in years. Now though I find waking up in the morning is one hell of a fight and I don't ever seem to have that alert feeling. Even after a cup of strong coffee I could fall back asleep. So I can continue weening this out of my system, but I would like to raise my energy level, both mental and physical. I go for a walk/jog through the park every day, take pictures of random things, so its not as if I sit in my room and do nothing all day. Any suggestions? I take 75 effexor before bed, and the rest of it all in the morning. When I talk to my psychiatrist, all I really get is suggestions to change the time I take it, which over the course of 2 years and 6 different meds has been fruitless... I see a psychiatrist. Although I really don't think I have benefited from anything she had to offer in terms of words or pills. I'm thinking more positive now than I have in my whole life.

WhizKid replied: "All drugs are bad for you. See what a book says abouth them on this site. Here is a site with a natural cure for depression. See site below."

Rachel M replied: "good for you. My mom is manic-depressive and absolutely has to be on medication. Without it, it's bad. Some people definitely need them, but, if you feel you can make a go of it without it, good for you. I abhor meds and try to abstain from them whenever possible. I myself have suffered from depression and panic disorder. I tried meds, they made me suicidal. So there's my back story, now for my advice: Make sure you are consulting a DR. when weaning. You may be able to do it alone, but maybe not. (I would actually recommend a psychiatrist, but so many people are prescribed meds like these by their DR.s that I'm just playing the odds). And here's the key piece of advice.... think positive. I was besieged by depression and panic attacks for 2 years straight until I took my therapists advice and started thinking positive. In the beginning, I didn't believe many of the positive thoughts I was thinking, but after awhile I started to and eventually I began to have positive thoughts without even trying. Since I started practicing this, I've had some panic and depression in the first 3 weeks as normal but after that, almost nothing since. I have had one bout of panic in the last 10 months and when it hit me, I instantly brought up a good memory and poof, it was gone. The last 10 months of my life have been awesome. (knock on wood)"

angelbsn replied: "Antidepressant therapy as well as weaning off Effexor can make you feel fatigued. Taking your entire dose at night may help. Wellbutrin usually "perks" people up. How are your other symptoms? Are they under control to your satisfaction? Another cause of fatigue is dehydration. How much liquid are you consuming every day? A good rule of thumb is to consume half your body's weight in water each day. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should consume 75 ounces of water daily. Also, when was your last physical exam? Fatigue is a symptom that can come from a variety of health issues, such as low thyroid, anemia, sleep apnea, etc. If you've covered all your bases and are still feeling fatigued, see your health care provider for a complete physical exam. Hope that helps!"
