Countess Jodhaa Bai replied: "An Overview of Lamictal and Weight Gain Several side effects are possible with Lamictal® (lamotrigine). Weight gain does appear to be one of them, although it is not among the most commonly reported Lamictal side effects. This data comes from clinical trials where the drug was extensively studied and side effects were documented. Lamictal and Weight Gain: Suggestions If you are noticing unexplained or bothersome weight gain while you are taking Lamictal, there are some things that you can do. Some suggestions include: * Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week. * Eat a heart-healthy diet. This diet should include: o Lots of fruits, vegetables, grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products (heart-healthy foods) o Lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts o Limited amounts of foods with saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium (salt), and added sugars. * Limit your intake of alcohol. Also, if you are noticing a weight gain with Lamictal, talk to your healthcare provider. He or she can suggest other ways for dealing with this problem. He or she may also look for other causes of weight gain, such as certain medical conditions. If the weight gain continues, your healthcare provider may also recommend other lifestyle changes or a possible switch to another bipolar disorder or epilepsy medication."

Kaley replied: "I used everything to lose weight, and nothing worked until I used acai berry. I know they say that pills will not work, but they sure worked for me, and they have been featured on the Rachael Ray Show too. There's a free trial going on right now at , why not check it out, what is the worst that could happen?"

. replied: "I never have heard of Lamictal causing obesity, coming from from a trust-worthy source who arrived at that conclusion after some type of objective scientific method. Yes, I have been taking this drug starting in 2005 and since then my dose has gone up and down ranging up to 400mg and down to what I take now which is 150mg. The drug overall doesn't have that many side effects especially compared to other drugs they use for the same purpose, and your dose is tiny. Sometimes psychiatrists will add on a drug called Topirimate if you ask which is a similar drug that causes major weight loss.. It is basically useless for controlling mood, and is used for epilepsy, migraines, tremors etc. But some psych doctors will add it because it is an anticonvulsant and many people with mood disorders are overweight. To answer the question: I have never had any side effects from Lamictal that I can notice, and even if I did, that isn't a death sentence. If you are determined you can take the worst of the psychiatric weight gainers like Zyprexa and actually be able to lose with healthy eating and physical activity. You just have to be willing to do the work."

Will Lamictal cause me to gain weight? I am taking it for depression.

aussie pride replied: "Results from an analysis presented today show that long-term treatment with Lamictal(R) (lamotrigine) is not associated with clinically relevant changes in weight. Nothing to worry about :D"

TRUTH replied: "if it concerns you (and it should apparently) go read about what they used to use in the u.s.a. before 1960... even back to 1920. they were able to use inexpensive natural normal vitamins then ... and the results were effective in 12 weeks or less with no toxicity and no negative side effects at all. now, they are not allowed (politically etc) to use what works. go figure. you can't even find out from a doctor today - they lose their license if they tell you the truth (if they even know it)..."

Jody replied: "Not likely, weight decrease, diarrhea and nausea are possible side effects but not weight gain."

answerplz replied: "no it wont. i take lamictal too and that was a big fear of mine before i started but i have been taking it for several months now and it has not changed my weight at all."

Does Lamictal cause extreme weight loss or memory loss over the years? I've been taking it for two years and lost 30 pounds over those years. I can't gain weight. And my memory is pretty terrible (haha- but I don't know how long it's been that way because I can't remember!) So has anyone taken Lamictal for several years and noticed any of these symptoms (weight loss or memory loss or inability to concentrate)? I am 22 years old 5'2 weighed 130 and now weigh 100.

Atma replied: "My husband has taken Lamictal for about four years without any weight or memory loss. I suggest that you speak with your psychiatrist about what's going on. Perhaps there's something else causing your problem; if not, the doctor should evaluate whether Lamictal is the best medication for you. Take care of yourself!"

Do some psychiatric medications directly cause weight gain, or is it just that they make you hungrier? I take Zoloft and Lamictal. I must say I am hungry a lot, but I have a lot of self-control and mostly eat the right things. Am I gaining weight because of these medications?

♥MJ. (Lidiya) replied: "well no, if you have the control and you are eating the right things then no you are not gaining weight."

Jorie replied: "Almost all psychiatric medications cause weight gain. I have been on antidepressents mood stabilizers they causes weight gain. I no longer take them and noticed a big change. I went from gaining weight when i used them to losing weight when i stopped. A good 20-30 pound difference is not unusual. I am pretty sure the medications alter metabolism in some way. Also, if they make you sleepy which mine did, i slept more and wasnt as active. Other things could be it causes water retention, constipation, makes you hungry since your happier. I think eating might help absorb the medicines better also. Eating protein, fiber, and avoiding refined carbs should help ward off hunger some what. If you add a stimulant for adhd you will lose weight or speed up your metabolism so you could try adding that. Like for instance adderall xr. It takes away true hunger. While you may have cravings your far less likely to give in since you constantly have a full feeling in your stomach. Instead of zoloft you should have tried welbutron as it can cause weight loss or no gain. If the weight is a big issue as it was for me i would say to try another approach to treating your self."
