My Doctor prescribed Toprol-XL to me for anxiety. Is heart medication used for anxiety?Should I be worried? My father recently passed away. I've been prescribed different medications for depression and anxiety (Lexapro, Ambien, Clonopin) but they are taken nightly and make me tired. During the day it's hard to function because of the grief I'm dealing with due to my father's sudden death. My doctor prescribed Toprol-XL to take during the day. I've read online it's for high blood pressure and heart problems...I dont' have these issues. Does anybody else take this for anxiety? Should I worry about taking heart medication for this issue if I have NO heart problems?

first l replied: "i dont konw"

Big R replied: "my be you should of asked the doctor be for you left, this is not a question for yahoo. !! come on"

vixen replied: "Any medication you are not sure about look it up. Usually if you just put the name of the med. into Google and hit search you can find out all you need to know about the medication."

dragonlady replied: "You need to discuss this with your doctor or a pharmacist. This sounds a little strange."

smudgeward replied: "If you have severe untreated anxiety long term it can cause heart problems. High BP drugs do make you tired at first for the first few weeks/months, sounds like this is a temp measure anyway so not to worry. I've been taking 3 of the strongest BP meds daily for 9 years and I'm really fit and strong. I think it's a perfectly legitimate question for yahoo because some really bright people log on here and some doctors don't know their *** from their elbow."

Jill S replied: "No, Toprol XL is commonly used for anxiety disorders however if you experience any of the side effects listed on your medication information sheet contact your Dr. right away."

Rag Dollie replied: "I take Toprol XL for high blood pressure. My doctor said she prescribe this particular med because I was experiencing a feeling that my heart was racing (sorry, don't know the technical terms). She said this med has some kind of blocker that helps reduce this. If you're uncertain, get a second opinion. Or talk to your pharmacist. Also, my pharmacist told me not to eat anything with grapefruit in it, as it has an enzyme that changes the effectiveness of the med."

What is more effective Metoprolol or Toprol-XL? I have been taking Metoprolol 50MG twice a day for years now. So far this was the medication that always somehow worked for me. Now my family doctor advised taking Toprol-XL 100MG once a day. But my insurance wasn't covering it. Now through Prescripton For Assistance Program I finally got Toprol-XL I was just wondering , is Toprol-XL 100 mg going to be enough for the whole day period and is it more effective than Metoprolol. Would appreciate any suggestions in this matter. Thanks a lot!

Lee s replied: "you need to ask your doctor why were the reasons he/she put you on the 100 mg. Don't be scare to ask the doctor question because sometimes they make mistake too. As you said the 50mg works for you for a long time I don't see why he/she change it to 100mg unless you reported to him/her that your status had change during your visit. Good luck man"

Nurse Jess replied: "They're basically the same thing. Toprol-XL is extended release where as Metoprolol isn't. So, when you take 100mg of Toprol-XL your body slowly lets the medication be released throughout the day. When you take Meotoprolol, you're taking 50mg at one time that are released quickly, and then getting another 50mg later in the day that are released quickly as well. You're getting the same dose, it's just that you don't have to take it as often with the Toprol as you do with the Metoprolol. Hope this helps!"

Suddenly switching from Toprol XL to Diltiazem? Hello people! I was just wondering, if that is ok to suddenly switch from Toprol XL to Diltiazem. I have been on Toprol for 3-4 months, but for the past month it's been giving me some hard time. I did skip my Toprol dose today, cause I got my new medications late this evening. Is that ok, if I start taking new med tomorow and missed my Toprol pill today? Thank you!

Noor M replied: "What strength of Toprol were you on? Also, why did you suddenly switch. Was your blood pressure not controlled? Toprol comes from a class of blood pressure medications called beta blockers. Diltiazem comes from a class of blood pressure medications called calcium channel blockers. Both have a similar outcome - they reduce blood pressure. There mechanism to reduce it is different. I do not know what your specific reasons for the switch are. But take it slowly, and start the Diltiazem at bedtime, once your body has adjusted to it then you can switch it to whatever time of day you like. Let me know if you need any more help..."

nicedoc replied: "Blood pressure medicines, as a rule should not be discontinued abruptly since you can get rebound hypertension afterwards (blood pressure skyrockets back up). Skipping one day shouldn't be a big deal but if you get sudden headaches, dizziness etc.., you should let your doctor know."

AbeLincolnParty replied: "Toprol is a beta blocker, and that tends to slow down the heart and in some complex not really understood way, it lowers blood pressure. If you have been taking the drug for months, the heart is use to it being there, so suddenly stopping taking the drug can lead to a rebound effect, of a racing heart. You need to bring this issue up to your doctor. See the FDA web site:"

My boyfriend is on the beta blocker toprol-XL and lost sexual desire, anyone relate? for the last seven months my boyfriend has had no desire for sex. He says he is not even aroused by looking at me or anyother woman. He has no sexual feelings at all. He doesn't feel frustrated, because there is no feeling. He is taking beta blocker Toprol-Xl, Benicar and other cardian medications. Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do to handle this? Did your relationship fall apart? He has emotionally shut-off toward me and I fear a break-up. Help....

oldfootlose replied: "I take toprol XL, I have ED (I don't get get woody but I don't have a partner to service either) but my sexual desire has not suffered. I would check the other medications. BTW how old are you two? Is he checking his blood pressure? You know I think he may be so embarrassed at not getting a hard-on he has quit. He still should see a doctor with you."

Lancelot replied: "I have heard of people having e.d. (erectile dysfunction) problems while on beta blockers, but not losing a desire to have sex. (The ability to achieve and maintaina firm, hard erection is sometimes lost while on this class of drugs.) My recommendation is that your boyfriend go to his doctor and get on another kind of high blood pressure drug with less sexual side effects. He'll notice a difference in a few days."

Kelly replied: "YES! I'm on toprol XL (i'm a woman), only a small dosage (25mg/day) and the same thing has happened to me. However, I was able to change birth controls to a type that increases sex drive due to hormones, so they kind of just cancel each other out as far as sex drive goes, and I am basically back to normal. Obviously, he can't get on birth control...he should probably talk to his doctor about switching from a beta blocker to an ACE Inhibitor or other kind of BP med. This sounds like a serious side effect, and there are many other medication options out there....there's no need to have it cause problems in your life."

Bee replied: "OK, I relate and Im female. Im on beta blockers as well and my companion and I are having trouble too. After several yrs of great sex I am completely disinterested and it really knocks our socks off. Its a severe side effect of the beta blockers and try as we might, we have to chose life over pleasure and hope one day I will be off this medication.."

star replied: "BETA BLOCKER BLOCK LOTS OF THING SEXUAL DESIRE CAN BE ONE BARE WITH HIM IF THE TABLES WERE TURN WOULD YOU LIKE HIM TO DO THAT TO YOU I USE TO TAKE A BETA BLOCKER AND MY HUSBAND STOOD BY ME HELP HIM OUT BY GOING TO THE DR AND SEE IF THEY CAN ALTERNATE HIS MEDS. I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL AS WELL AS HOW HE FEELS SOMETIME SIDE EFFECTS OF MEDICATIONS ARE TEMPORARY SO BARE WITH HIM"

Is it safe to stop taking Toprol XL (a beta blocker)? My husband used to be 50 pounds overweight. His cardiologist put him on so many medications : pre diabetes pills, high chloresterol pills, high blood pressure pills, and beta blockers for a cardiac arrythmia. He has since lost the weight, and has discontinued all meds except the beta blockers. He is doing great, in fact, he has never felt better. He would like to stop taking the Toprol as well, but I feel that all the cardiologist wants is money and is not at all concerned about his actual health. He will be 50 next month and does not want to be dependent on drugs all his life like his 80 year old mother. Can he safely stop the beta blocker by weaning himself off it like he did with all the other drugs?

SubJ replied: "Beta blockers can also be reduced by gradually tapering the dose. Before doing, however, one shud consult a doc as the ill effects if any which are notice during the weaning operation has to be taken care of. They are long acting drugs and hence ill effects show up somewhat late."

sansa replied: "Toprol XL (metoprolol succinate) can be weaned off but to safely do so, your doctor should be the one instructing you on how your husband may go about it. Even though your husband may feel great, the beta blockers help his heart by controlling blood pressure, angina (chest pain) and possibly heart failure. Although your husband is uncomfortable with taking medications for the rest of his life, you have to keep an open mind that those medications could be possibly saving his life. I'm sorry you feel uncomfortable with your doctor, but it is extremely important that you keep communication with your cardiologist. The fact that you were refered to a cardiologist in the first place means that your husband needs help. The cardiologist doesn't make any money from writing perscriptions but rather, from the bi-annual check up and the occassional doctor visits. Try asking your friends and a couple nurses who they think is a good cardiologist. Perhaps you can transfer to that doctor."

When should I quit taking toprol xl for blood pressure? I have been on toprol xl 200 mg along with benachar 40 mg for high blood pressure for a couple years now. four months ago I began a weight loss diet and regular exercise and have lost weight and lowered my blood pressure from 150/90 to 116/72 and my pulse runs slow around 52 beats which leaves me tired sometimes. has anyone been on these medications and if so how do you slowly get off it as I don't feel i need it anymore. what should I do. thanks Ralond

Tammy M replied: "ask ur doctor before going off any meds, especially for something as serious as high bp, u will prolly need to be weaned off of them, or he may just lower the dos"

what are the withdrawal effects of toprol xl?? my mom is on the 50 mg and she wants to get off of it slowly to take another medication.( i don't know the name of it). and she wants to know how to get off of it safely and what are the withdrawal effects??

Holly P replied: "My husband was just prescribed this and its awful. You cant stop cold turkey, you have to wean yourself. The best way to do this is to call the doctor. If she didnt have any of the side effects of the drug then she shouldnt have withdrawal effects. All it does is slow your heart rate down so if shes off of it and has a past with rapid heart rates then her heart rate might speed back up. Either way she needs to call the doctor or even a pharmacist to see what they suggest."

jdm z33yih replied: "Toprol XL should be taken continuously. When ending Toprol (Metoprolol) treatments, dosage should be lowered gradually over a period of about 2 weeks. Do not stop taking this drug unless directed to do so by your doctor, abrupt withdrawal may cause chest pain, breathing difficulties, increased sweating, and unusually fast or irregular heartbeat. It is best to take this medication at the same time every day. There are other beta blockers that she can try including: Sectral (acebutolol), Tenormin (atenolol), Zebeta (bisoprolol), Corgard (nadolol), Bystolic, Blocadren (timolol), or the doctor can change her medication to an ARB (Angiotensin II receptor Blockers): Diovan & HCTZ, Lotrel, etc."

Metoprolol Succ ER by Sandoz ( Generic for Toprol XL)? I was informed that this drug was recalled!! I was not informed by my pharmacist, I found out from a 3rd party. If anyone is out there taking this medication, Please find out if what you are taking is a part of the recall. And now for my questions 1 - Have you had any side effects from this med? 2 - Do you feel when a medication you are taking is recalled that you should be informed.

CrazyB replied: "I am a nurse and my husband also takes this medication. I have not heard anything about a recall. Generally how it works is that the drug company or FDA notifies the pharmacies that a particular drug has been recalled and will no longer be available for sale. I am not aware of any mechanism to notify patients of drug recalls. There is a mechanism for notifying patients when a medical device has been recalled."

SZO replied: "Taken from an article from Pharmacy Industry News last Nov. 12, 2008: "Sandoz is voluntarily extending the September 17, 2008, recall of Metoprolol Succinate Extended Release Tablets 25mg and 50mg, to include all strengths of distributed lots with expiration dates through August 2010. This voluntary action by Sandoz is due to deficiencies in documentation practices and in-process controls for this product. This voluntary recall is being conducted down to the retail level with the knowledge of the FDA. The affected lots were shipped approximately between November 2006 and October 2008. (Sandoz Press Release 11/3/08)""

Toprol Xl again!!? i called my doctor and told him i still had dizzness with this medication, his suggestion is take half of my 25mg pill and it shouldnt cause chest pain or anything? is anyone else cut down to this dosage that might help me out??

Leka replied: "I actually am supposed to take it once in the morning and once at night...same dosage 25mg which is still too much so I only take it in the morning with my mutivitamin which so far so good seems to be working. I only take one at night if I am feeling like my pressure may be up some....ya know a dull headache and just feeling blah. Another doctor had me at 100 mg which was insane...I was dizzy all the time, afraid to drive and could not focus at work. So is your doc says try half of that 25mg...it should work. Good Luck!"

Toprol XL side effects? I just took my second dose of this medication, due to a heart condition I have and high blood pressure, with caused chest pains. Everytime I take a dose, I get this feeling. Almost like im "stoned". I get this heavy feeling in my head, and I feel almost, very calm and relaxed. I feel this way now, its just a weird, kind of scary feeling. I feel that if I try moving my head fast, that I will get a major dizzy spell. Is this a side effect, or should I talk to my cardiologist? I also feel like my breathing slows down a little bit... Maybe this pill is supposed to do that???? I have tachycardia, along with aortic stenosis also, so I do have a fast heart rate ....

Kalkail replied: "While all the side effects you have described are consistent with the use of this adrenoceptor blocker I would contact your cardiologist as a 'major dizzy spell' could be dangerous. The side effects list from MedicineNet: SIDE EFFECTS: Metoprolol is generally well tolerated. Side effects include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, insomnia, nausea, depression, dreaming, memory loss, fever, impotence, lightheadedness, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, cold extremities, sore throat, and shortness of breath or wheezing. Metoprolol can aggravate breathing difficulties in patients with asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema. Transient and serious side effects from the Wiki: Transient effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, tiredness, diarrhea, unusual dreams, ataxia, trouble sleeping, and vision problems. It may also reduce blood flow to the hands and feet, causing them to feel numb and cold; smoking may worsen this effect. Serious side effects that are not to be tolerated for any length of time include symptoms of a very slow heartbeat (less than 50 bpm) (e.g. persistent dizziness, fainting, unusual fatigue), bluish discoloration of the fingers and toes, numbness/tingling/swelling of the hands or feet, sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction (impotence), hair loss, mental/mood changes, trouble breathing, cough, and increased thirst. Other highly unlikely symptoms include easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever, yellowing skin or eyes, stomach pain, dark urine, and persistent nausea. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness. Taking it with alcohol might cause mild body rashes and therefore is not recommended From RxList: TOPROL-XL, metoprolol succinate, is a beta1-selective (cardioselective) adrenoceptor blocking agent, for oral administration, available as extended release tablets. TOPROL-XL has been formulated to provide a controlled and predictable release of metoprolol for once-daily administration. The tablets comprise a multiple unit system containing metoprolol succinate in a multitude of controlled release pellets. Each pellet acts as a separate drug delivery unit and is designed to deliver metoprolol continuously over the dosage interval. The tablets contain 23.75, 47.5, 95 and 190 mg of metoprolol succinate equivalent to 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg of metoprolol tartrate, USP, respectively. Its chemical name is (±)1-(isopropylamino)-3-[p-(2-methoxyethyl) phenoxy]-2-propanol succinate (2:1) (salt)."
