What are the after effects of prednisone once you are no longer taking it? I have a son-in-law that is no longer on prednisone but ever since he has quit taking it he has had several health issues. They include headaches, shortness of breath, numbness in his legs. He has even thought he was having a heart attack. Currently he is wearing a heart monitor 24/7. Doctors say all could be stress-related, maybe from his job. Some say that it could come from his no longer taking prednisone for his apropecia. Most symptoms started after his stoppage in the prednisone. i am most concerned as he is only 30 years of age and that another son-in-law was just diagnosed with MS, upon having many of the same symptoms as my first son-in-law.

crowfeathers replied: "This is in reference to stopping prednisone and using an inhaled steroid which wouldn't be as strong. This is still good information on what happens when you stop prednisone. Particular care is needed in patients who are transferred from systemically active corticosteroids to Aerobid Inhaler because deaths due to adrenal insufficiency have occurred in asthmatic patients during and after transfer from systemic corticosteroids to aerosol corticosteroids. After withdrawal from systemic corticosteroids, a number of months are required for recovery of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) function. During this period of HPA suppression, patients may exhibit signs and symptoms of adrenal insufficiency when exposed to trauma, surgery or infections, particularly gastroenteritis. Although Aerobid Inhaler may provide control of asthmatic symptoms during these episodes, it does NOT provide the systemic steroid that is necessary for coping with these emergencies. During periods of stress or a severe asthmatic attack, patients who have been withdrawn from systemic corticosteroids should be instructed to resume systemic steroids (in large doses) immediately and to contact their physician for further instruction. These patients should also be instructed to carry a warning card indicating that they may need supplementary systemic steroids during periods of stress or a severe asthma attack. To assess the risk of adrenal insufficiency in emergency situations, routine tests of adrenal cortical function, including measurement of early morning resting cortisol levels, should be performed periodically in all patients. An early morning resting cortisol level may be accepted as normal if it falls at or near the normal mean level."

zoegirl replied: "Part of the answer has to do with how long he was on it. Some people only take it for a week or do a "burst". There shouldn't be to many after effects then. But if he took it longer - and especially if he had side effects while taking it (restlessness, hunger, etc...) - he could definitely have some withdrawal after. Especially if he went cold turkey instead of tapering off. I myself experienced hallucinations, panic attacks and headaches the first time I went off prednisone. It is a very good drug with some very bad effects. They say that you need to tell dentists and surgeon's for a year after that you had taken prednisone because some of the effects (like blood thinning) can stick with you. Just be sure that the doctors monitoring his heart also know he was on pred. Good luck!"

What can cause numbness in toes? I just started taking Niacin, 1200mg Fish Oil and a diabetic vitamin daily in addition to my inhalers, hypertension meds, etc. I am also currently on a Prednisone regime where my blood sugar is quite elevated. Can any of these medications cause numbness in the toes?

bellamonster replied: "A diabetic vitamin?? Are you diabetic? I know that circulatory problems can cause numbness and so can pinched nerves. If you are a diabetic, then I would advise you to call your doctor. Numbness is never agood sign for anything."

Husband 58 yr old male, had neck inj at work last yr, since that time, numbness, tingling, pain in right hand,? tremendous swelling, like baseball mitt, primary doc, sent to rheumatologist, who referred to jhh rheumatology, they think polymyalgia rheumatica. Treat with prednisone. Also affects knees and feet. Is this from neck or separate disease

steveg9635 replied: "He should see a neurologist. It could be a nerve impingement, any where from the cervical vertebrae to the elbow to the wrist(carpel tunnel)."

knittinmama replied: "It could all be related. Has he been seen by an orthopedic dr? It could be a slipped disc, pinched nerve or polymyalgia rheumatic, which my mom has, but she hasn't had any swelling, just joint pain."

What is the cause? Back pain lower lumbar referred to testicle/groin.Doc says pinch nerve and prednisone? X-Ray says no bone spur, etc. Doc doesn't seem to concerned, but I am. I have never had such an odd pain. I feel tightness/soreness in Quad, slight numbness/heaviness in right leg as well. Pain starts in lower right lumbar and radiates around hip over into top of thigh into groin and right testicle. No hernia, though. MRI in a week after Christmas otherwise prednisone for 12 days ( a little nervous about that). No kidney stone, no blood in urine, stool normal (no pain during #1 or #2). So what the heck? Its not sciatica because the pain does not go down the back of leg. Calf has cramping. All on right side. Left side of lower body is peachy keen. I started having a little trouble during Thanksgiving and a little time prior. My hamstrings had been tight but Doc was impressed with hamstrings since Oct 31 annual physical when they were tight. Back stopped hurting not long after Thanksgiving but when I returned to work I started sitting and the pain returned. This past week though it began I am 33 and had prostate checked during physical (the whole fist). MRI will be done IF pain has not subsided after prednisone treatment.

Charlie replied: "As we age, the catillage between the vertebrae thins and flattens, and gradually disapears. This can cause a "pinched nerve." The irritaion between the 2 vertebrae causes swelling...which causes pressure on the nerve...hence treatment with prednisone. Sounds like you are getting excellent medical care...so just keeping asking your doc your questions til you have a clear understanding of his findings. Sitting typically aggravates the situation."

Ron P replied: "If he is taking an MRI of the head he may be ruling out MS. If the steroids work and MRI of the brain and spine shows lessons he may order a lumbar puncture to check for a specific protein. Also you should have your prostate checked (psa). How old are you? Don't worry their is nothing you can do. You seem to be doing all the right things."

Searcher replied: "I don't want to make light of your condition since, as others say, it may be more serious but have you examined poor posture and lack of physical movement during your working day as the possibility. Since you say you sit for work, try this - once every 15 minutes get up and walk around your desk or office for 2 minutes. Make sure to stretch muscles in legs, abdomen, arms, etc. each time. Then sit down and resume work. See if that helps after a couple weeks. Like a lot of people who work in a sitting position for hours on end (especially if a computer is involved) you may be suffering from a severe case of computeritis (my term) which can only be cured through regular physical activity throughout the day. but even if the doctor does find somethgin, my suggestion isn;t goign to harm you and may in fact make you feel better so it is worth doing anyway."

What Autoimmune Disorder do these symptoms match? I am being tested for what my doctor thinks is Autoimmune issue. Lupus, MS, and dermatomyositis has come up. My symptoms include off of Prednisone: Hives on hands or welts, recurring headaches only on right side of head, cold sensations in neck and head, numbness on right side of body, ear ache every day, loss of balance and cooridnation, tongue swelling, drop things a lot...I was wondering if anyone that has an Autoimmune disorder can match these symptoms.

Sim S replied: "everything you want right here "

cory replied: "I would recommend following advice from Dr. Luc Montagnier, Nobel Prize winner 2008, for his research in autoimmune diseases. If you want more info, and specific research paper info, please e-mail: cory"

Facial Numbness and Paralysis? If a person suffers from facial numbness, including dry eyes, and this worsens into twitchy muscles, what would you say it is? Here are some more details. In the initial situation, the numbness progressed for 4-5 days before the muscle spasms began. After about 2 days of muscle spasms, the half of the face that was affected became completely paralysed. Anti-virals did nothing, and MRI came up with nothing. Prednisone solved all issues within 24 hours, but needed to be taken for two weeks before symptoms did not return without it. When sensation returned, there was intense pain along lines (across forehead, across cheek and base of jaw). Since then, there are periodic bouts of numbness and eye flutters that can be controlled with anti-inflammatory meds. Any ideas what it could be? Doctors I've seen don't seem to have any ideas. I don't think that there is a neurologist in the city on the island I live on, but thanks for your thoughts... Nope, no oral ulcers... Although the episodes are more likely when another health issue arises (like a cold).

versantly replied: "follow up with your neurologist."

littleemissthing replied: "I am not a doctor do not take my word for this BUT it COULD be bells palsy"

Druantia replied: "My initial thought was Bells Palsy as well. Were there any mouth sores that predated the numbing sensation?"

Andy J replied: "it might be guan barrae which is not selled that way but this is the phonetic spelling"

A RF replied: "Dear As far as the diagnosis concerned, if there is nothing in MRI then we may look into another dimension. You may look towards previous dental treatment specially in last 6 months. Secondly Any head injury in last 6 months. These may indicate what kind of problem is this otherwise this is not the case of Neurologist only Medical specialist can treat these kind of case but without definite diagnosis."

What does it mean when Prednisone makes you feel better? I've been suffering from debilitating abdominal pain, chronic IBS, and severe fatigue, which have been worsening over the past several years. About two weeks ago I began feeling pins and needles (paresthesia) in my right arm, plus some accompanying pain and numbness. A couple of months ago, I saw the doc for back pain so severe I could hardly move (it resolved itself after a couple of weeks, although sometimes I feel it a bit). Well, this time the doc prescribed a course of Prednisone for the pinched nerve in my shoulder/arm. I've been taking it for two days, and for the first time in I-don't-know-how-long I slept well and awoke at a reasonable hour feeling refreshed. My pain and fatigue are not completely gone (neither is the strange arm feeling), but the improvement is so significant that it puzzles me. First of all, why hasn't my GI doc put me on the miracle drug for my IBS? It's way better than Imodium or Percocet! Secondly, why is it making all my problems (even my mild joint pain and awful fatigue) so much better? Even the "head fogginess" I've had lately and the moodiness seem to be a little better. I don't ever want to stop taking it!! My doc says I can't stay on this forever. The nurse says this is a normal reaction to Prednisone. Huh??? Actually, the problem is in the left arm, not that that matters. Oh...another thing...I had been getting pretty thin from loss of appetite (my GI doc had told me to drink Ensure), but now I can eat again, and I'm already filling out! I'm 41, but I've felt about twice that age lately.

Maria replied: "Could you cut this question in 1/2. Maybe you will get some responses but this is just way to long to read."

happee1 replied: "1st...not to long to read...it is informative... the prednisone is an inflammatory that reduces the inflammation in the muscles that is why you are feeling better and why your arm isn't tingling as much. you must have an inflammation and it is putting pressure on the nerves which in turn causes the tingling as it constricts it. 2nd you can't take this forever it is an artificial stimulant that shuts your adrenal gland down ..you need your adrenal glands for proper body function. you can not produce as high a steroid output naturally so that is why prednisone helps. 3rd...there is no miracle cure for IBS...if Imodium isn't working try taking metamucil POWDER not a pill or wafer form and drink this 2 times a day. this will add bulk to your intestine and absorb the excess water you are producing.."

i have a place on my outer thigh that is partially numb. ideas on making the numbness go away would helpful? i went to the doctor for this (and i absolutely hate going to doctors) because i have had this probelem for over a year. the outer part of my thigh is constantly numb on the top layer. i can take something extremely cold (like a bowl of ice cream and place it on this area and i can't feel it for about 2 or 3 minutes until it gets past this area of numbness. It also itches on the inside where my veins and nerves are, which is very hard to scratch. my doctor said she thought it had something to do with my sciatic nerve and gave my a shot of some kind of steroid and a dose pak of prednisone and it didn't help AT ALL. i really hate doctors and don't have time to make appointments with 20 different specialists. (since doctors offices close at the same time i get off and it's hard to get time off from work) i will try just about anything now... please help

bodmodangel replied: "Try with something hard (like a rough towel) and rub this on the area for a few minutes. Do this EVERYDAY, 2-3 times a day until you can feel it. Then try something softer and softer. That will help the nerve damage."

Health concern.. not sure if serious or not... I feel some numbness in my upper left armpit...? that is going down into my left arm & my breast a little. I have been taking Prednisone steriod for back pain for a few days now which has made me feel extremely irritable & angry & tired. I am now extremely tired & have felt numb like this for a couple of hours... any suggestions?

cyberprayerwall replied: "anytime there is numbness in the upper arm you want to have it checked. While many things can cause this, including stress, joint inflammation in the elbow, back or shoulder, etc ... one wants to ensure there is no problem with the heart or circulation. always best to be sure. Also since you have back pain this could be caused by a pinched nerve or inflammation in the spine etc. .. one just can't tell thru email.... Please speak with your doctor and if it gets worse, I would call them or go in tonight to be checked... but if it remains steady and is not too bad then you would most likely be okay waiting till morning to go in.? but then again, I am not a doctor. If it is worrying you, I would call in to the night # for your doctor's office and ask about it to be sure. I will lift you up in prayer for this condition and ask God to remove any problems that may be causing this."

Have you had an adverse reaction to Tetanus Vaccine? I need to know what is going on from others who have had the same experience - and what did you do to get help? I had a tetanus shot at the end of Sept. I did get sick (fever, sleepy, swelling and pain at shot site) and I didn't get better. Two weeks later I get itching and chest pains through to my back that lasted one hour the first day and two hours (maybe 3) the second day. Then the 3rd day the itching was more intense and my left eye swelled. Took Benadryl, saw Dr- got cortisone shot put on prednisone (made me more sick). Told it was more likely the antibiotic I took after the shot. (I believe it is tetanus vaccine) Relapsed 1 week later, got another long lasting steroid shot. On Benadryl and Zantac several times a day. I still itch! I have anxiety like feeling in chest. I have numbness or weakness sensation in arms and legs. Tight chest feeling, pressure in head.. can't sleep and afraid from not knowing what is happening. Tetanus vaccine can cause Guillain-barre, is this G-B?

slytheringrl29 replied: "You might have gotten a mild form of tetanus. Most vaccines are actually a weak or dead germs. A friend of mine had lock-jaw for months after getting a tetanus shot. Don't panic, but definately stay intouch with your doctor."
