Are there any guidelines for the use of risperidone and fluoxetine for the treatment of aggression in autism? I want to know what guidance clinicians have (weather it be NICE guidelines are codes set by the GMC) concerning the uses of Risperidone and Fluoxetine in the treatment of aggression and irritability in autism- (or even information about guidelines in other developed coutries)

Cocoa Dusted Girl replied: "fluoxetine makes people aggressive! but here's 2 links: and"

Doug Black replied: "Fluoxetine does not make people crazy, so please ignore the other comment. Im not sure about guidelines other than looking up the contra indications on both meds. However on a more personal note I have a good friend who I have known for years with schitzophrenia and a tendance to be a bit aggresive.. well used to. He has succesfully been treated with respiridone and fluoextine, (and zopiclone to help him sleep) and to my opinion has made a much improved recovery from years ago. I understand that autism and schitzophrenia are not the same and will have differences in the way they manifest themselves, but both can show aggressive outbursts and therefore treated the same. The respiridone is the antipsychotic which helps stop (or reduce) any psycotic problems (intense mood fluctuations) etc, and the fluoexetine acts as a mood stabiliser to stop a depressive crash. The best bet however would be to visit the drug manufacturers web sites, the will most probably have plenty of product literature about uses and research with their drugs that will give a much more informed opinion from a scientific and factual perspective."

Can the drug Risperidone get you high? I have a 9 year old who has autism and is taking risperidone. My problem is that I also have an 18 year old son who likes to get high on anything he can including prescription drugs. I have locked up drugs except this one as i did not think he could use it am I wrong? Please I need someones help on this? How dangerous is this for him to do? I read the side effects for the 9 year old and they scare me.

nehusker4nu replied: "yes you are wrong, lock up any and all medications as though you can get hgh on most medications if you take enough of them."

daniella o replied: "Risperdal is an anti psychotic medication so anyone taking that is not "psychotic" will most likely get sick. of course any medicine if taken inappropriately can cause bad side effects. you should talk to your son that likes to get high and show him what the medicine is really for. im sure if you did show him the side effects he wouldn't want to take them."
