honda cb400n rev limitation under load? hi, my bike was fine and ran great but i took it out monday and i couldnt get past 5,000 rpm, as soon as it got to 5,000 it kinda went pop, pop, pop, pop, until i knocked it up a gear and it would go again, until the same would happen again once the revs hit 4/5k. Ive been working the last few days to fix it to no avail, ive cleaned the carbs, checked the connections to the cdi, generator, ignition coil and cdi pick up. and generally checked the connections of the whole loom, and also checked for any air leaks. The bike revs up fine in neutral, but wont go past 5,000 under load. I have now found out that i can get to 6,000 in 1st, 5,000rpm in 2nd and 4/5,000 in 3rd, 4,000 in 4th etc. etc. Any ideas. thankfull to any help from experience!!! Bike is honda cb400n superdream, air-cooled 4-stroke twin cylinder. I also replaced the rocker cover gasket in the same day, then took it out to find this problem. thank you

Ian K replied: "One thing to check is fuel filter. A partial clog will give you similar symptoms."

captronalli replied: "I would start with you spark plug wires and check them for leakage, and then check your coils.....You say it only happens under a load? This would be the case in all gears if you were on it hard, not just in 5th. Put your bike in a dark garage and rev it up and see if you have any sparks jumpin' around the frame or engine areas..."

philipscown replied: "could be an ignition problem - weak spark. If you've been doing work then check plug caps, leads and all HT connections. Could also be a failed coil. Could also be a leak in the diaphram of Cv carbs (if those are on this model). Easy to replace, used to be relatively cheap."

bikinkawboy replied: "Try new spark plugs."

topgearrocks replied: "I don't know much (if anything) about bikes but if the same were happening with a car I would assume it may be the spark plugs need cleaning or replacing."

blackcloud replied: "Do you mean it was fine until you changed the rocker gs-kt?weird.can't see how that's do it.unless you've damaged one of the plug caps.if you have spares swap em.The other thing that jumps out is the carb slides,if these are not going full height it'll give the symptoms.Take the top covers off and put your finger in the air intake side and see if they have good, smooth movement by lifting the slides up,check the diaphragms for holes, all it takes is a pin hole.stretch them and hold them up to the light,if they're holed it'll show.Pretty tough bikes,i'm sure you'll find "one" of the carbs isn't working right."

Timbo is here replied: "Could be that one, if there are 2, of the ignition coils is on its way out"
