chevrolet corvette 1985 LT! or L98? whats the difference between a LT1 motor and a L98 motor? in1985

emiller1998 replied: "You have an L98 350 that was used in the Vette from 1985 to 1991. The LT1 was first used in 1992 when it went into the Vette and a year later into the F-bodies."

aleromi99 replied: "The difference is that they use a different intake and move the distributor to the front of the cam behind the water pump..also they used aluminum heads ...L98 TPI's were a toque monsters....but didn't get great gas mileage as the LT1's did, but the Lt1's did have much horse power from the factory... Mostly they are both good engines just need some good mods to make them better."

pharm_docs replied: "There's a little bit more in terms of difference -the LT1 uses a reverse-cooling; the LT1 heads are more efficiently cooled, and as a result the LT1's boast more compression. On top of that, the LT1 heads were revised significantly, resulting in much higher airflow potential (although both heads can benefit from porting). Also, the LT1 ignition is optical/digitally managed, as opposed to mechanical as in the L98 - the benefit is much more accurate spark control, but the downside is reduced reliability (opti-sparks have a reputation for dying every 70k or so). Aftermarket conversions are readily available to eliminate the opti's reliability issues - making them coil-pack type ignitions like the LS engines have. While the L98 is known for torque, the LT1 loses nothing to the L98 in torque and trumps it in horsepower. As a result, although several of the parts may bolt up, there's no significant interchangeability betweeen the L98 and LT1. As a matter of fact, you have to be a little careful about the LT1's, because there's some issues regarding revisions to the cam and ignition system that reduce the interchangeability between LT1 parts! If you have either motor and it runs well - don't think that it would be an upgrade to switch either way, however, since both motors can be easily modified to put out killer power numbers."

mastertech35 replied: "the LT-1 was only 8.5 to 1 comp.made from 1975 to 1985. I am sorry but I have never heard of a L98. In 1985 The Corvette came with only 1 engine, and that is the LT-1."

gta_tony replied: "Remind me never to use your shop if I'm in AZ Mastertech. The LT1 motor was used in the starting in 'vette 92. You're thinking of the old school LT-1 motor. The L98(350 TPI motor) was from 85-91. If you've never heard of a L98 motor then you must have been living in a cave or something, it put GM fuel injected motors on the MAP in my opinion, GREAT street motors due to their torque. They were also in the Fbodies from 85-92(the TPI induction was, the L98 didn't hit the Fbodies until 87). Seriously, you're a tech and don't know what a L98 motor is? Yikes. Pharm answer the real question at hand."

What would be the most efficient way to boost HP on my '89 Trans Am GTA? The car is a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am GTA. The engine is the 1982-1992 350CID (5.7L) L98 TPI Chevrolet V8. The car has automatic transmission. What would be the most efficient way to boost HP with just bolt-on parts & not have to tear the motor apart doing it? I'm not the most mechanically minded but I have always done my own vehicle repairs & maintanence.

Joe P replied: "Better exhaust, chip it, cold air kit, ........"

brendongoldsmith@yahoo.com replied: "Exactly what Joe said, Then, Supercharger or turbo, and larger throttle body."

country boy replied: "get the car to breath and you can do a lot so start by putting a cold air intake then if the car doesn't have it put a true dull exhaust i would go with shorty headers with either a glass pack or flowmaster mufflers next put a racing chip in it. if that car has a carburetor you can put a carburetor riser it will help but not that much if it is carburated you can buy elderbroc high rproformans carburetors if the car is fule injected put a higher octan gas in the car with a high proformans icnistoin"

fbird90nw replied: "I'll make a chart for ya on gain estimates 1- Chip, Headers, Cold Air Intake, Exhuast, and Tune Up= +19hp 2- Bigger Cam, Racin Ignition, Fuel Managment Tuning= +20hp 3- SLP Runners, Timing work, New Rear ( helps tq more than hp), 160 degree thermostat= +28hp There listed by cheapest to most expensive, i left out alot but these are the most basic that i can come up with off the top of my head. So you should gain around 67hp+ with these mods. But to do all this will cost over a grand or more you gotta get the good parts no cheap stuff. Good Luck"
