How do rain sensing wipers work? I have seen that my Mercedes has this little circle on the windshield almost touching the roof of the car. The dealer says its the rain sensor but how does it work?

wacky94 replied: "Most likely uses a type of optical sensor to detect the moisture. The sensor emits an infrared light which on dry glass is almost totally reflected back to the sensor, but with water on the glass the reflection is reduced. The more water, the less infrared light is reflected to the sensor. When the amount of reflected light reaches a preset level, the wipers come on. They can also be switched off for washing the vehicle."

Yamse1 replied: "If you look closely you will see a bunch of little holes in that "Circle" area near the roof. Not in the windshield but in the circle attached to the rear view mirror. All of these little "eyes" are emitting a infra-red beam and as it becomes refracted by the rain the wipers come-on and also vary their speed from infinite to maximum speed depending on the need."

1991-1999 Mercedes S-class reliability? Im looking for my very first car and I got good enough grades to buy a car worth up to $20,000. I really wanted a Mercedes, specifically an S-class. I looked at the years specifically 1997-2003. I found that the 1997-1999 models looked much more muscular and did some research and found that these models are about 6 inches longer then the 2000-2003 and were built much like tanks (the 1997-1999). I heard some bad stories about the 2000-2003 ones. Whats your take on it? I want the S500 model with the rain sensing wipers and the butter leather interior and wood accents. LOOKS GREAT

assasino replied: "s class 90-99 is w140 chassis, and 2000-2006 is w220 chassis. the years you need to stay way are 2000-2002. those were the first years and had a few issues. chances are most likely by now they are fixed, but you don't want to take the chance, so stay away from s-class 2000-2002. in my opinion w140 (90-99) is much better. find a 97-99 in good shape and with not that many miles. they don't cost much now since they are 2 generations old, you can find a really nice one for a little over $10000."

Bandit-05 replied: "What years are you really looking at? The time frame you've mentioned spans over 3 generations of S-Class vehicles: W126 ('81-'91) W140 ('92-'99) W220 ('00-'06) Each generation has their pros and cons."

Joe V replied: "I like the 2000-2003 S500 but ive seem some scary repair bills which isnt why i wouldnt get one unless u have money to spend later on in repairs. i would go for the 98-99 S500 reliablity are much better for these 140 chassis."
