Nissan 240sx automatic to manual transmission conversion? I have 1990 nissan 240sx,its automatic and now i want to convert it to manual, i want to know all the parts that i will need to make a successful swap tranny, and what would the cheapest price be that i can get on doing it, im thinking of a used tranny not new one, and i will do the labor.

Mustanger replied: "You'll need the clutch pedal with clutch/brake mounting bar, clutch linkage or hydraulics, Flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk, pilot and throwout bearings, bell housing with clutch fork, and depending on the car a new rear crossmember, rear trans mount and drive shaft plus all the mounting hardware. Easiest and cheapest way is to find a same year and model junker with everything intact. That also lets you see how everything fits and bolts up. Even then you're looking at more money than the car is worth. Probably $5K or more, if you do the work."

C7S replied: "First you need a new engine made for manual transmission. 2nd, you need a manual transmission. 3rd, you need a new computer chip and exhaust parts. The cost to do this would cost double the price of buying a factory made manual 240sx."

atsun1741 replied: "C7S gives out horrible answers over and over... here is the only site you need... if you visit junk yards and do a little research you can get this done yourself for around $800. if you need a shop to do the work figure on $1000 for parts and $500 for labor. I have done a bunch of these swaps. Takes me a couple hours now."

jay s replied: "I know I am not helping as much as the other guys, but the safest way to go about this is to get down to your local Nissan Wreckers and ask for a manual gearbox with all the parts. This way you are getting it second hand, and using a complete donor car so you know you wont be skipping any parts. The way i'd do it if i had the cash is a complete front clip with manual tranny. And i'd ask if I can have the driveshaft and diff thrown in, because the turbo variant would have a stronger tailshaft and LSD. For example, a 240sx / Silvia / 180sx / 200sx with SR20DET or KA240DE/T (depending on what configuration you want to go with). I'm guessing you are in America. Where I am, we only have SR20DE/T or CA18DE/T as the obvious, available options. From having this halfcut with all the fruit, you can make the change over to your car by using the donor car as your instructions... If that makes sense. I think I look hard enough, I wouldn't spend more than $400 depending on where I source my parts from. If I buy it from a private sale, then it's even cheaper but it's buyer beware and I could buy something worn out. Goodluck and have fun with it :) Great car by the way."

1000RR replied: "The best part about manual transmission is they are a lot of fun to drive, and you get most of out of your engine (in terms of power). As for costs, it varies. You have to make sure the transmission you get can actually handle the power of your engine. The 300zx has a great motors, and if you plan to do modifications to it, I suggest you join a Z-related forum and find out what other uses have done. A good transmission can cost you anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500 plus installation, which varies on the shop."

John Paul replied: "Besides the engine and drive train has to be removed engine control computer is different wiring harness is different starter motor is different then you have to remove the entire dashboard to install the clutch pedal reinforcements necessary. clutch slave amd master Cly's and tubing runs along the engine wall under tin shields with the engine harnesses. Drive shaft is different Center console is different. Only start this project if you have a complete donor 5 speed car to take parts off of. Then you will find you will still need new parts like motor mounts trans mount and clutch parts. So with a donor car and $3,000 cash you might pull this off. I recommend you go out and buy a good 5 speed car. And twin turbo bell housing is larger and that car uses vacuum asist clutch."

John Paul replied: "No they will not convert a auto to manual. Because there are many parts you forget about like wiring clutch pedal and engine controls and computers that have to talk to each other. And worst of all the car is smogged with an automatic so your stuck shiftless in LA. Trade it in for a manual transmission car soon. Besides the New 350z has 307 HP and gets better gas milage."

hondab16tuner replied: "To put it in perspective the conversion would run around $15,000 to get it done correctly. You would need the following: Tranny, tranny mounts, shift linkages, shifter, console for inside the car to accept the shifter, ECU from a manual, COMPLETE engine/tranny wiring harness from the manual, clutch master cylinder, hydraulic lines, clutch pedal assembly, flywheel from the manual car, exhaust from the manual because the tranny is a little larger than the auto, and quite a bit of time. I have probably forgot some little parts, I just listed what I could remember off the top of my head. But the dealer would NOT even think of doing this."

nontatertot replied: "Unless you really like the car, it would be cheaper and less work to buy a different car with a manual transmission. Not only do you have to buy the tranny, you have to cut a hole in the firewall of the vehicle, add a clutch assembly, run all the linkages from there to the transmission, navigating all the "stuff" under the car and dealing with crossbeams, etc. By the time you paid for the labor to do it if you can't do it yourself, you'll spend more than to buy another vehicle."

Aussie Bloke replied: "I hate to tell you this (since I believe that all cars should still be manual), but it will cost a bunch. Since Skylines are pretty expensive, it may be worth it to you, but it's an enormous job, with a lot of ways it can go wrong (I've seen people do auto to manual conversions before - it always cost a bundle, and still rarely drives properly.) You need clutch lines and a clutch master cylinder, new mounting brackets and cross-members for the new gearbox, a bell housing, clutch and flywheel (autos don't have a flywheel), new pedal box and pedals, some custom work on the firewall to install the pedals and linkages, possibly bodywork on the car floor to fit the gearbox and shift linkage, new differential (autos usually run taller gearing than manuals), sort out a bunch of electrical issues (since there will be stuff the ECU wants from sensors in the auto that won't exist after the swap), new console and carpet...and this is just off the top of my head. It's usually much cheaper to sell what you have and buy a manual. Good luck! Good luck!"

Automatic to Manual Conversion? I currently have a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder with a failing Automatic transmission that needs to be replaced pretty soon. Everything else on the car is in perfect order and I would really like to replace the automatic with a manual transmission. Any idea how much the cost difference is to replace it compared to converting it?

Ferret replied: "In my experience, about the same amount of money as long as you're willing to go root out the parts needed as they are needed for the mechanic doing the job. Friends have had good luck doing this with Toyotas and Hondas. You have to REALLY trust whatever mechanic is doing this though, because it's not a cut and dry job."

drag1line replied: "This foreign truck did offer a 5 speed transmission as optional equipment. Due to the price of parts on foreign cars and trucks, you CANNOT afford to buy many parts. You would need to find a junk one in a salvage yard and pull the flywheel, linkage, clutch attachment, drive line, probably computer, It is a big job for experienced mechanics or auto enthusiasts. I am not saying it could not be done, but you really better plan the job closely, It is always those little unexpectedthing that get in the way. Most shops will charge around $2000 to rebuild a Nissan transmission, so that would be your target for the job to stay under. Note, include a new or rebuilt pressure plate and clutch as minimum new parts. Good Luck"

Jeffrey S replied: "Well, converting it would mean putting in a new manual transmission, along with all the added parts. So I would guess there would be little cost differential, and maybe a slight increase in costs to convert to manual. Might try a junk yard and pick up a used one."

krooser2 replied: "I would either repair the transmission or sell the Nissan and buy a vehicle with a manual. Believe me when I say it will be very expensive to make the conversion. It may also be illegal since you are changing the emission equipment (an auto would have different specs than a manual)...it probably won't pass a smog check either. Find a RELIABLE shop who can either repair it or install a used tramnmission. Get estimates in writing...get references, too."

1996 nissan 240sx se transmission conversion? im going to buy my cousins 240sx w an AT transmission and 100,000 miles for $2500. the car is stock and he hs never raced it only used it to go to work which is like a 15 minute drive. How much will it cost me to drop in a manual transmission and rebuild the ka24 motor? (i heard of some rebuild kit but im not sure if they are good) i cant do an engine swap b/c it wont pass smog in CA. i also wanted to know what are some good upgrades for the motor and a good smooth exhaust system.

Rdwong replied: "First off, I'd strongly suggest not rebuilding the ka24 motor. It is not exactly a well designed motor. Import a SR20det or RB25det. 1 you get a turbo so you can increase the horsepower much more and much easier, 2 your resale value will go skyrocketing. A rebuilt 240sx with a rebuilt and turbo charged ka24 might sell for 6000$, while one with a sr20det might go for 18000$. Transmission wise, you have to buy different brackets, mounts, pedals, some drilling, clutch lines, clutch pedal and cylinder, manual transmission module, and such. NOT easy. And then with a motor rebuild itself costing maybe $4000 or so. It should be much cheaper purchasing a slightly used sr20det or importing one than rebuilding the ka24, and you wouldn't need to rebuild it yet. Change the ecu, chip it, crank the boost up a slight bit and have it tuned, then your pushing well over 200 hp. you can always upgrade to a fmic after. overall I don't see how you can get away with 10 thousand if you don't know how to do nearly all the work yourself. The magazine "Project Cars" had one nearly identical to your question and they go through the basic step by step and most minimal cost for the transmission conversion. Good luck. I had a 89 240sx as my first car with a ca18det and a garret gt28 ball bearing turbo and many many nismo parts including 2 way lsd. custom wide body kit and wide wide rims, great drift car, made over 240 whp."

Transmission conversion. How many man hours? I've got an auto 92 Nissan Pulsar N14 and want it converted to manual. Been quoted 800 for parts + 65 an hour for labour. How many hours will it take approx.?

Brandon B replied: "A Long Time. I don't know that car specifcally how it's set up, but probably in the 20 hour range, could be more, could be less. Remember, You have to wire the reverse lights, change the pedal assembly, change the flexplate to a flywheel and, change the shifter. not counting the trans itself."

Personally I work mainly in the computer field, and I tend to charge more per hour than other techs, but people are loyal to me because if I fix something in 1 hour at $76/hr, and someone else takes 2 hours at $45/hour...well...do the math...who would you rather pay? I've done jobs in 2 hours that took other techs all day IF they could even do it. Experience is key. Ask them how many of these conversions they have done before. If they can quote you a rate, they should be able to quote how long it SHOULD take too, if they know what they are doing!"

Engine swaps run from $400-$1200. If you spent $250 on tools, you could accomplish it all by yourself. You'd be best off renting a cherry picker instead of buying one.
