Burning and Dodging with Photoshop CS3? Is there a way that I can select an area with the magnetic lasso and then burn or dodge that area?

Dream Light replied: "After you select the area choose the Burn or Dodge tool from the tools menu (shortcut = letter O)"

How can I make photoshop run better on a weak computer? My laptop is 981 MHz, 1 gig ram, windows xp, and i'm using photoshop cs3. It runs extremely slowly, and certain actions (such as dodge and burn for some reason) tend to make it crash. Is there anything I can do to make it run more smoothly without upgrading my hardware?

Triple Threat replied: "i think you need a new computer. Anything under 1g is too slow to process many of things you would like to be able to do in PS...not to mention adobe apps are RAM HOGS...you would need 2gs of ram at least, 4 is better."

ahardinjr replied: "Adobe Photoshop is a memory and processor hog. Your laptop is too slow to run it; you need to upgrade. If you can't afford to upgrade your computer, then double your RAM and get a 7200 RPM hard drive, and disable all uneccessary services from starting up. My suggestion is to invest towards a new laptop or use an older version of photoshop."

Nintendo guy replied: "i don't think u can u need a new comp."

Surge replied: "The processor system requirements for Adobe Photoshop CS3 are "Intel® Pentium® 4, Intel Centrino®, Intel Xeon®, or Intel Core™ Duo (or compatible) processor". Unfortunately the system specs you have listed do not meet the minimum specs required (based on the processor speed you have listed). Memory wise your laptop fits the bill (CS3 minimum spec is 512MB) and increasing memory certainly might help, but you are probably limited with the amount of memory you can put into the laptop based on the age/speed of the processor (1 Gig of memory might be the max the laptop can support). One thing you don't list is the amount of free hard drive space. Make sure you have at least 500MB of free space at all times or performance with any application is going to suffer (it's actually closer to 200MB free that you start having problems). If you have enough free space on your hard drive, check the size of the swap file (right click my computer, choose properties, click on the advanced tab, click on settings under performance, click advanced... At the bottom is the virtual memory section). Typically I've seen others recommend 1.5 times your system memory as the size of swap file to use (so 1536 MB). Unfortunately this solution may help with crashes but it won't help with the speed issue."

Pao V replied: "If you need help speeding up your computer then I have what you need. You're computer isn't running slow mainly because of photoshop, it's running slow because of how your computer is like. I have 500MB RAM only with a 2.0 GHZ and yet it runs faster than a 4GB RAM with 3.0 GHZ computer. Just email me."
