adding a stage1 jdm turbo kit to 99 e46 323i bmw ,do I need to upgrade my map sensor? some turbo kits comes with a 22psi map[intake manifold absolute pressure] sensor and piggyback sensor controllers to handle the added boost pressure. My boost is around 7-8 psi . I have a add on adjustable air/fuel ratio sensors controller.

tronary replied: "How would you do that? Why would you do that? How would you upgrade a manifold absolute pressure sensor ?"

brod replied: "There is no MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor installed in this car. Perhaps you are referring to the MAF (mass airflow meter). The MAF reads the mass of air that goes into the intake manifold and forwards it to the DME (engine computer). Along with the 02 sensors, they are the 2 most relevant sensors to air/fuel mixtures. Tronary's comments holds true whether it is an MAP or MAF."

Joey B replied: "I wouldnt listen to a single thing 'Tronary' says. He was 100% wrong on my question. The guy knows nothing."

How much extra hp would a turbo give my BMW? I have a stock 97 BMW 328is w/ standard transmission, that I am wanting to make faster. My fiance has a 400+ hp Trans Am, and I want to hang with him in my car. Is this possible with a Turbo? How much horsepower will a turbo give my car? This is what I'm thinking of: Plus a turbo manifold. Is there anything else I can add to this car? (never had a foriegn car before, just used to Chevy LOL) Oh, and does anyone know the stock hp for this model? Thanks for any help! Nope, not rich, just trying to avoid selling the car. I really like it, its nice and will be good to have when I have kids in a couple years but I want speed now! I used to have a Chevy 1/2 ton with a 300+ hp 350V8 and now I'm driving a car! I just want my fiance's car! I got the car cheap, kbb value at $8000 give or take $500, and bought it for $5000. Ok, rgh & insomniac: Can you both provide me with a website or email me privately telling me all about your preferred part? And why I should get that one versus the other? You both have good comments but they are contradicting, so I'm lost. But don't get carried away arguing on YA, just so we don't get into trouble. Thanks again! :-)

Christopher C replied: "first don't buy "performance parts" from ebay 90percent is cheap knock-off parts. with a turbo depending on your supporting mods will can give you approx 80-120 percent more horsepower. again you will need supporting things such as fuel, tuning, etc ,etc when playing with cars you can have fast, reliable, and cheap. you will never have all three."

olz431 replied: "It will not give you enough for the money you are going to spend, that is a big waste of time(i dont want to be mean) but it is. Your best bet is to sell the car while its still worth money and get something else(unless you are rich, then do what you please)"

rgh127 replied: "The '97 328is has about 190bhp stock. If you want big power...the turbo is your best bet. It should bump you up to about 300 to 400 hp (which is plenty to keep up with a Trans Am since your car is much lighter). Also, unlike a supercharger, a turbo is only on when you want it to be, so it wont tear up your engine. However, because of this, you will have a bit of a lag with a single turbo...if you want to get rid of the lag, you'll have to go with a twin turbo, which will only cost a little bit more. As for your car in the long run...KEEP IT! BMW makes some of the most reliable cars out there, along with Toyota and Honda, but the beemers have much more style. I'm currently throwing a twin turbo in my 1988 325is with absolutely no hesitation at all because these cars run forever. I've had plenty of E30's that have gone to 300,000 and 400,000 miles. Sorry, I got a little carried away...I'm a BMW fanatic :)"

Insomniac replied: "That is a small turbo, with a tiny intercooler, only suitable for a car of up to about 1.6 or 2 litres. I would never bolt a turbo onto an engine, you have to do a lot of machining work, such as lowering the static compression ratio of the engine, and you are asking for more power, so you must expect a shorter engine life. I don't agree with turbos anyway. They all have some degree of lag, run badly 'off-boost', create a massive hot-spot in the already hot under-bonnet environment (heat is a massively bad thing to have in a car) and only give the goods at higher revs... Superchargers are a much better bet. If they fail, the engine still runs. Don't produce a hot-spot. Act like a much larger engine through the rev-range. For your car, you would need a larger Eaton supercharger, and a good sized intercooler, possibly larger injectors and fuel pressure regulator, and water-methanol injection system. Power, torque and reliability."

BMWSGOD replied: "You can boost a cars power to infinity with a lot of money. The more boost you put in the engine the faster your tennis shoes start walking."

Where can i buy a good turbo kit for my 2000 e46 328ci on the web? Im looking to buy a turbo kit on the web but it seen hard for me to get one at a good price. Whats a good website to buy for my bmw.

gfresh1210 replied: "look up ams in west chicago they are the mitsu gods"

Bill replied: "since when is a BMW 328ci a mitsubishi..."

Terrence B replied: "Eventhough you're in the wrong section, I'll answer this one. If you have a Bimmer, you need to be looking to Dinan for your performance options. BMWs are expensive to replace parts on already andt the cooling systems are a bit fragile. Turbos only make an engine run warmer so make sure you get the turbo kit from people who truly know BMWs. Expensive? Yes, but they are so good that their stuff is even backed by BMW's warranty. These are good cars and the last thing you need is to have problems with it. Look up Dinan and give them or give them a call. Here's their link: Good luck"

critic replied: "quite frankly a supercharger installation is perferable for your car....and basically makes the same increase in power as a turbo when installed at equivalent level of boost. a supercharger vs. a turbo: -runs cooler -lighter -delivers power earlier and in a more linear fashion -easier & cheaper to install. there are bolt on installations for your car........ forced induction is not cheap (performance & power is expensive) but it will make you seriously quick, and turn your bmw into a contender. in terms of installation count on a full day of shop labor time, including retune of engine management system. it is preferable to also install -cold air intake, performance exhaust-catbacks, and performance headers. these are mild boost installations designed to run on your stock internals. if you want to go less money you can consider installation of a nitrous kit with a short shot (will provide same power increase and create no more/no less heat and engine stress than a turbo or ssupercharger). regards, owner past & present of supercharged cars (former owner of 2 BMW's)"

Im buying a turbo kit for my e46 but i want a strong whistle sound when i change gears,is that possible? I'M im putting 10 lbs of boost, but what got me attractive to the turbo was that sound everytime a shift occurs, i heard the sound on a EVO which had about 11 lbs of boost. I was reading on the web that BMW wont get the sound. I hope is not true, but before anything is that true and how can i get that strong whistle sound everytime i change gears.

willy replied: "a good turbo and cold air intake and a good blow off"

Eddie V replied: "Any turbo can give a good whistle. It depends on the Blowoff Valve you get. Some blowoffs have a quiet swoosh sound, and some give out loud whistles. Check around and look what type of blowoff valves are available for your car."

Michael M replied: "its the blow off valve that makes the the sound its as it releases the excess boost when the rpm drop on the shit from one gear to the next different blow off valves well give different sounds"

Lover not a Fighter replied: "As you can read it is the BLOW OFF VALVE. === > I was reading on the web that BMW wont get the sound. That is because that is the PROPER WAY to install the blow off valve. Once the air enters the system, it is METERED CHARGE. And metered charge (or air) should NOT escape the system. That throws off the fuel/air mixture. The proper way to do that is to blow it off BACK into the system - AFTER THE MAF sensor. ==== So all those COOL guys and the blow off valves are screaming - HEY I DON'T KNOW how to install my blow off valve !!! ==== So I know you think it is cool. But it is the wrong way. Good luck..."

BMW 316i e46? My car has to little power for such a heavy body, so i was looking at Mosselman turbo kits, what would i need besides the turbo kit, coz the engine is stock, need some info. thanks in advanced.

Bill M replied: "If you have enough money anything is possible, but you'd be better off to buy a car with a turbo."

wright301293 replied: "buy the car and put an supercharger in it"

sammyr replied: "ok in the way of turbo theres quite alot of work involved but it is most definately worth it. Firstly you need the turbo changer. Then you need a manifold capabale of having a turbo charger, all of the boost pipes to take charge air to the engine an intercooler bigger oil pump bigger water pump (both for cooling) sports air filter and full 2 or 2.5 inch exhaust system."

george.m replied: "I would suggest you look for a reconditioned 1.8 or 2.0litre engine for yr car. This will save you alot of expenses later. 1.8litre is the correct power for E 46. 2.0litre is slightly more on power. If you are looking for power and not fuel price, then go for 2.8litre engine and gearbox swap. Your 1.6 engine may not last long with turbo and modifications. take care."
